Was Darren Dreifort a flash in the pan?
Was Darren Dreifort a flash in the pan or is he going to build on the incredible season he had in 2004?
Dreifort was a mediocre starting pitcher by all metrics for 6 straight season. Entering the 2004 season he was once again penciled into the 5th starter spot. He was expected to have 4+ ERA and win a few more games than he lost. Most of his wins are a credit to the Dodgers run support.
From 1998-2003 Darren never had an era in the 3’s and never won more than 17 games. That all changed this past season. Darren had a great feel for all three of his pitches. Going 20-8 with an era of 1.94 and making his very first all star appearance.
Dreifort’s ACE like emergence opened the door for a trade deadline deal. Acquiring BULLPEN arm Ryan Dempster for Ace Tim Worrell.
When asked about it new found success Darren quipped “Attention to detail. I watched guys like Gordon, Worrell and Nomo prepare, watch film and then subsequently dominate batters. I think early in my career I relied on my stuff and got my self into problems the second time through lineups. Hitters would adjust and I just kept pitching my game. Gotta keep the batter guessing and not always rely on my fastball when I got in trouble.”
Darren hopes to win another 20 games for the Dodgers and pitch in the playoffs again the season. He is currently penciled in the the #3 sport in the rotation.
“We expect another dominate season from Dreifort this season. We don’t want to put too much pressure on him, but we expect great things and hope he is once again a playoff pitcher for us. We always hoped he would figure it out. We had teams calling every year trying to poach him away while he was struggling. Their scouts obviously saw the same potential we saw. VERY happy we were patient with him.”
“Clay Condrey is another very similar pitcher we’re high on. Clay has been in the minors for NINE seasons! We’re going to give Clay the ball every 5 days and hope Darren can help mentor him into the next Dominate Dodger Ace.”
“We have a great mentorship culture in LA since. It all Started with Steve Shields. Back when I first got here in LA. Steve was a dominate Ace, but also made time to mentor a young Tom Gordon. The team culture has been passed down all these years and still thriving today.” said GM Jmich24
