Monday 4/25/2005: Toronto's Burrell wins Player of the Week award
Pat Burrell from Toronto wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .458 with 9 RBI and slugged .875 in 24 at bats. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Israel Alcantara, San Francisco's starting centerfielder. He hit .435 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.130 in 23 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Alcantara has hit 6 homeruns this year while batting .324. He adds 4 doubles, along with 12 runs scored.
Sunday 4/24/2005: Terry Adams (BAL) will miss full season
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's right-hander Terry Adams experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against Chicago (A), Adams complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Ligament Elbow. This season Adams compiled an ERA of 5.02, going 0-0 in 0 starts. He fanned 15 while giving up 22 hits in 14.1 innings.
Saturday 4/23/2005: Minnesota's Derek Jeter ropes five hits
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's second baseman Derek Jeter once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Oakland's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Saturday. In the 1st inning he belted a double off Doug Nickle. In the 3rd inning he belted a double off Doug Nickle. A pitch from Doug Nickle in the 4th inning left his bat for a two-run triple. A double off Scott Sullivan in the 7th inning accounted for his 4th hit. He collected a single in the 8th. Derek scored 3 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! He now has a total of 24 hits this season, accounting for a .289 batting average. Minnesota improved its record to 16-4, scoring 8 runs on 16 hits.
Tuesday 4/19/2005: Baltimore's Veras severely injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's right-hander Dario Veras suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 8 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Boston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Bicep Tendon which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .268 against Dario this season. While posting an ERA of 3.77 he went 1-1 in 0 starts, fanning 19 and walking 0 hitters.
