The American League's best player of the week was Minnesota's Carl Pavano, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Troy Glaus from Chicago (N) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Troy went 12 for 28 (.429), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 14 RBI.
Sunday 5/8/2005: Jose Reyes out for 6 weeks
ARIZONA - Arizona's second baseman Jose Reyes hurt himself in the 9th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Jose Reyes will miss at least 6 weeks. Ruptured Tricep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Jose has gone 26 for 137 (.190) this season, hitting 2 taters and driving in 8 runs. He has scored 14 runs on his own.
Saturday 5/7/2005: Troy Glaus on fire, crushes three
SAN FRANCISCO - Chicago (N) beat San Francisco 11-1, but that was not the real story of the game. Troy Glaus was, as he went deep three times. In the 1st inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Brian Barber. His 2nd shot, a three-run homerun off Brian Barber in the 2nd inning, cleared the fence in left field. His 3rd shot, off Chris Schroder in the 7th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. Troy finished with 5 hits in 6 AB, doubling once, with three runs scored and collecting 9 RBI. Albert Belle was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 9/24/2004.
Thursday 5/5/2005: Tom Gordon turns in great performance against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Age doesn't matter. At least Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Tom Gordon shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Cincinnati, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. Gordon (7-0) struck out 9 and walked 2, throwing 73 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Cliff Floyd provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Gordon needed as he got 4 hits in 5 AB, stroking a double, scoring two runs. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 23-7, scoring 6 runs on 12 hits.
