HOFFBL end of April, May 3rd edition
Lets take a look at how things are shaken up as the month of April came to a close.
Over in the AL East early on it looks like the Yanks are headed to their 4th straight pennant even though their ace Nomo has started shaky. Boston and Baltimore are the closest competition, but both are sporting sub 500 records thus far. We will continue to watch to see if there are any developments to derail the early success of the Yankees and allow another team a chance at the East.
Again, the AL Central is where the action is With the Twinks holding a scant 1 game lead on the Tigers, each holding the top 2 records in the AL, one can almost feel that it is gonna be a foregone conclusion that the wild card team will once again come from the Central. Before it is all and done though, could the Royals be headed to the post season? The White Sox have yet to commit to getting a lotto pick as they continue to hold onto aging vets trying to squeeze more drat picks out of them. Cleveland might be able to be in the top 6 draft picks again for next years draft, which has a class most say is UH MAZING.
Seattle looks like it has moved back to reclaim the AL West from California. After a couple sesaons where they fought tooth and anil, last year California went on a selling spree and opened the West back up for another team. Texas though, while only a game over five hundred is only three games back. It is not looking likely, but baseball has fickle gods and stranger things can and have happened. Cali is going full throttle into their rebuild and Oakland looks to be getting into lotto contention for their pick.
Arizona was shot out of a cannon to start the season, and has the best record in the NL and tied with Min for the best in baseball. The DBacks are looking to demand their due and be the first of their expansion year to reach the playoffs. The Dodgers are only tow back and not looking like they are ready to accept a new division king. Still with a formidable line up we can expect this to be a heck of a battle all season long. Could this be the year the West takes the spotlight and sends two teams to the post season? Colorado, looks like they will have a 90 win season, alas that will not even come close to being enough to break into October. The San’s are each still vying for the 1st pick in next years draft.
Over in the Central the Pirates came swashbuckling out parrying the other central contenders away from first so they alone could claim the month of April as theirs. Quite shockingly both the Cubs and the Cards are only one game above 500. Might be just slow starts from both of them, but this prognosticator thinks we will be talking about both of them as the season progresses. Houston looks to have accepted the rebuild and Milwaukee is looking like there is no life in the team.
Our last stop on the roundup is the NL East, and the Braves look to claim the flag one more time for a record 21st time. Doubt that record will ever be broken. Philadelphia’s GM has claimed the streak will stop at 21 while Philadelphia is a 500 team right now they are seeing brightness on the horizon. Washington also has a new GM and they are making some noise also, their record is not indicative of the team, and looks to have gotten out to a slow start. One can not help but feel that they will probably be at least a 90 win team this season. Looks like the Mets are still in the rebuilding phase, and the Marlins have jumped off a cliff and are going for the number 1 pick. Florida had a great run in four of the last five seasons, but just kept falling a little short of unseating the Braves.
It will be quite interesting to see how a couple of these divisions shake out, as both the Centrals tend to be blood baths, and it looks like they will continue that tradition, of being the toughest in all of baseball, each having three teams that could take the division. The real question though is, are the DBacks gonna dethrone the Dodgers?
