Monday 5/23/2005: Player of the Week honors go to Cabrera and Lee
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Detroit's Miguel Cabrera this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Miguel pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .560 with 6 HR and 16 RBI while slugging 1.360. He now has homered in 5 consecutive games as well! Colorado's leftfielder Carlos Lee had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He hit .417 with 5 RBI and slugged .917 in 24 at bats. Lee has hit for a .309 average this season. He has 24 extra base hits along with 102 total bases, resulting in a .630 slugging percentage.
Wednesday 5/18/2005: San Francisco has no chance in a 2-hitter by Chris R. Young
SAN FRANCISCO - Philadelphia's right-hander Chris R. Young will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against San Francisco on Wednesday. Young (4-3) struck out 7 and walked 2, throwing 66 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Matt Murton helped Young at the plate, he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Wednesday 5/18/2005: Ramon Vazquez out for full season
TEXAS - Texas' second baseman Ramon Vazquez will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Texas and Tampa Bay. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Vazquez collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Vazquez was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Back Muscle. Vazquez has walked 18 times this year and posts a .310 OBP. While batting .223, 31 for 139, he has driven in 21 runs.
