TAMPA BAY - It was a great day for Minnesota's southpaw Mark Buehrle. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Tampa Bay on Wednesday. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Buehrle (4-7) fanned none and walked none, throwing 91 pitches. The hitting star for Minnesota was first baseman Jim Edmonds, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, with 2 RBI. Minnesota scored 5 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 6/6/2005: Troy Glaus clubs three rockets
CHICAGO (N) - Troy Glaus was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Chicago (N) to a 9-4 win over Washington by homering three times. A pitch from Rich Harden in the 3rd inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 341 feet from home plate in right field. Number 2 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 431 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. His 3rd shot, a two-run homerun off Jeff Nelson in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in right-center. Troy got 4 hits in 4 AB, scoring three runs and collecting 9 RBI. So far this season he is batting .314 with 23 homers and 66 RBI.
Monday 6/6/2005: Minnesota's Manny Ramirez ropes five hits
TAMPA BAY - Manny Ramirez is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. Number 1 in the 2nd inning accounted for a double. A pitch from Ryan Hawblitzel in the 3rd inning left his bat for a double. His 5th hit, a three-run homerun off Ryan Hawblitzel in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. He collected singles in the 6th inning (two RBIs) and in the 8th inning . Manny scored 2 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .360. The final score of the game was 15-5.
Monday 6/6/2005: Pittsburgh's Pujols wins Player of the Week award
It's the 16th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's third baseman Matt Stairs. He hit .375 with 13 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 24 at bats. This year Stairs drove in 41 and scored 33 runs while batting .290 with 9 longballs. Albert Pujols wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .517 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 29 at bats. Pujols has hit 13 bombs this year while batting .394. He adds 18 doubles, along with 55 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting and 5th in RBI!
Friday 6/3/2005: Philadelphia's Mauer out for full season
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's catcher Joe Mauer suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Mauer laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Wrist. Mauer has walked 13 times this year and posts a .357 OBP. While batting .309, 64 for 207, he has driven in 24 runs. He's 10th in the National League in batting!
