Holy Cow it happened again for a Braves pitcher this season! John Smoltz already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one as he picked up his 400th career win. Smoltz went 7.2 innings. He allowed no earned runs , giving up 4 hits while striking out 2. He has amassed 4699 K's in 4791 career innings so far, and posts a 1.87 lifetime ERA. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' He set a career high with 28 wins in 2002. Smoltz won 20 or more games a season 13 times. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! The number he has put up are well worth it. All in all John is number one all time in ERA, 3rd in wins, 2nd in strike outs, and 2nd in complete game shutouts.
The Braves sent P Jim Abbott, P John Smoltz, P Greg Maddux, P Jose Valverde, and C Miguel Ojeda to the AllStar game. This is Smoltz’s 13th trip, and also Maddux’s 13th too, but his first since 2000. Abbot went for only his second time ever, for Ojeda it was his third trip and Valverde made it for the first time, though we are sure he will make it several more times in his career.
While Valverde still leads the league in saves with 29, the month of June was not very productive, as he has only picked up seven this month, after amassing 22 in April and May. Riviera over in
Minny is only one back and been piling them on of late.
The week started out pretty good with four straight wins, but then the Braves went into a tailspin losing three straight to the DBacks. The lone win in the four game series was Smoltz picking up win number 400.
Currently Ojeda, Cianfrocco, and Cedeno are on pace to belt 30 homers on the season, and Obando has an outside chance.
Pitching is still leading the Braves, as the hitters are not hitting for average much, but are just average hitters.
What does the second half of the season have in store for our Braves?
