Monday 8/15/2005: Los Angeles (A)'s Riske severely injured
LOS ANGELES (A) - Los Angeles (A)'s right-hander David Riske experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 9th inning of the game against Kansas City, Riske complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Los Angeles (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Riske had suffered a Torn Tricep Muscle. In 0 starts this year David struck out 44 batters in 44 innings of work. His ERA is 2.86, his record 2-5.
Monday 8/15/2005: Colorado's Roberts wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Matt Holliday, Seattle's starting centerfielder. Matt went 13 for 30 (.433), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 12 RBI. Holliday has hit for a .350 average this season. He has 47 extra base hits along with 211 total bases, resulting in a .605 slugging percentage. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! The National League's best player of the week was Colorado's Brian Roberts, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. In 23 at bats he hit .565 with 4 HR and 7 RBI. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! He has hit 16 longballs while batting .283 this season. His 113 hits and 40 walks add up to a .348 on-base percentage.
Sunday 8/14/2005: Frank E. Thomas stars with 500th career homerun
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s first baseman Frank E. Thomas already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one, unloading for his 500th career homerun. A pitch from Akinori Otsuka in the 4th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 358 feet from home plate in left field. In 15 years of big league action so far, Frank E. has compiled a batting average of .314, along with 2909 hits and 1836 RBI. Frank E. hit 30+ homeruns in a season 9 times, hitting 40 bombs 4 times. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.' The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
Friday 8/12/2005: Zack Greinke fires NO-NO against Washington
PITTSBURGH - It was an unbelievable day for Pittsburgh's right-hander Zack Greinke. The 21-year old pitched a no-hitter against Washington on Friday, showing that he may have a great career in front of him. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Greinke (15-5) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. J.T. Snow provided Pittsburgh with the offense Greinke needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double. Pittsburgh scored 2 runs on 5 hits.
Friday 8/12/2005: Jim Abbott quiets Milwaukee bats with shutout
MILWAUKEE - Jim Abbott took the mound and never left. And Milwaukee hitters couldn't touch him at all. Atlanta's southpaw gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 22 career shutouts in 417 games started. Abbott (18-4) struck out 2 and walked 2, throwing 52 of 92 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Atlanta's centerfielder Alex Sanchez went 2 for 5, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, scoring two runs with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Abbott. Atlanta improved its record to 82-34, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 8/8/2005: Hensley Meulens out for 5-6 weeks
BALTIMORE - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Baltimore's leftfielder Hensley Meulens will miss about 5-6 weeks after being hit by Robb Nen in the 2nd inning of the game between Baltimore and Minnesota. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Cheekbone. Surgery will be performed next week. Meulens has walked 40 times this year and posts a .322 OBP. While batting .228, 74 for 325, he has driven in 48 runs.
