HoFFBL Dog Days of Summer Report: The NL
At the mid point of August as the heat is brutal to all, the NL league finds that not too much has changed.
The East has the Braves romping to a mind boggling 24 game lead. What started early as looking like there might be some contention in the division has recently subsided into a memory. The Braves had had a very adventagous schedule in late July and August to go on a fantastic streak as they faced some of the worst teams in the NL. Since July 25th they are 18 – 4. 3 – 1 vs the Padres, 2 – 0 vs the Phillies, 3 – 0 vs the Marlins, 3 – 1 vs the Mets, 2 – 1 vs the Reds, and finally 3 – 1 vs the Brewers. It really helps the record facing so many teams that are fighting for the top spot in the lotto to boast a teams win totals. The main concerning issue for the Braves going forward is their payroll. They will be forced to kill a ton of salary. What is the most shocking at the moment is the top win total in the entire leage is 18 wins, and the Braves have three starters with 18.
In the Central, it is all Pirates, and the team that typically has 5 starters on the DL at any given moment, is still rolling and has bounced back in front of the Cards for first place. Five games up on the Cards, and also five up on the Cubs, that have recently been charging back into contention. Do the Cubs have enough in their tank to once again get the Central Crown? This prognosticator says the Pirates hold on, as they are getting a ton of guys back from the injury list.
Over in the West it is a freakin barn burner. The Dodgers and Dbacks go back and forth who is gonna win the division. Only one game separates first from second, and only one game separates the best record in Baseball with the third best. The Young DBacks look to be the jewel of the NL for a few seasons to come. This is gonna be fun to watch to come down to the wire.
