Thursday 9/1/2005: Nen and Young receive Pitcher of the Month award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Minnesota's Robb Nen. His ERA of just 1.24 helped him to a 4-2 record in August. He worked 50.2 innings, striking out 50 hitters while walking 2. Robb pitched a shutout as well. Robb has a record of 18-2 this season, with an ERA of 2.05. In 176 Innings he was able to strike out 151 batters. Robb has pitched 2 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Chris R. Young couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He hit .466 with 23 RBI and slugged .795 in 73 at bats. Holliday has walked 37 times this year and posts a .423 OBP. While batting .351, 130 for 370, he has driven in 84 runs. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Richie Sexson, New York (N)'s starting first baseman. Monday 8/29/2005: Player of the Week honors go to Loretta and Hyzdu
Detroit's shortstop Mark Loretta had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Loretta helped his team with an average of .440 and 9 RBI in 25 at bats. Loretta has hit for a .268 average this season. He has 55 extra base hits along with 237 total bases, resulting in a .509 slugging percentage. It's the 7th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Arizona's rightfielder Adam Hyzdu. Hyzdu helped his team with an average of .350 and 13 RBI in 20 at bats. Sunday 8/28/2005: Cincinnati's Reith severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Brian Reith will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Philadelphia on Sunday. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Ligament Elbow which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .287 against Brian this season. While posting an ERA of 5.16 he went 4-10 in 23 starts, fanning 69 and walking 39 hitters.
Sunday 8/28/2005: Carlos Pena punishes Milwaukee with three dingers
MILWAUKEE - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Arizona's first baseman Carlos Pena accomplished that feat in a 23-2 win over Milwaukee. A pitch from Paul McClellan in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 359 feet from home plate in right field. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Paul McClellan. A 401 foot drive to left field marked his 3rd bomb, a two-run homerun off Carlos Pulido in the 6th inning. Overall he stroked 6 hits in 6 AB, doubling twice, with FIVE runs scored and collecting 7 RBI. On 6/29/2005, Bruce Aven was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Sunday 8/28/2005: Bobby J. Jones pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
OAKLAND - Bobby J. Jones had some fun again. Oakland hitters did not. New York (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 5 career shutouts in 282 games started. Jones (10-7) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 94 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' New York (A)'s first baseman Mark Teixeira went 2 for 4, hitting a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Jones. New York (A) improved its record to 82-49, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.
Saturday 8/27/2005: Los Angeles (N)'s Jim Thome gets milestone hit
HOUSTON - Los Angeles (N)'s players had every reason to congratulate Jim Thome, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 1st inning was a three run homerun off Bud Smith. In 12 years of big league action so far, Jim has compiled a batting average of .280, along with 392 homeruns and 1350 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
Friday 8/26/2005: Brian Lawrence (HOU) will miss 8 weeks
HOUSTON - When it rains, it pours. Houston's right-hander Brian Lawrence will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Los Angeles (N) where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Houston wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Lawrence had suffered a Fractured Elbow. Opposing players hit .278 against Brian this season. While posting an ERA of 4.02 he went 10-6 in 26 starts, fanning 65 and walking 48 hitters.
Friday 8/26/2005: Livan Hernandez blanks Cleveland with a 2-hitter
DETROIT - Great days are rare. But not for Detroit's right-hander Livan Hernandez. Cleveland found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Hernandez (6-10) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 114 pitches. Detroit's catcher Bengie Molina collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hernandez. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Friday 8/26/2005: Paul Wagner turns in great performance against Toronto
TORONTO - Seattle's right-hander Paul Wagner is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Toronto found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Wagner 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 23rd shutouts in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Danny Bautista singled with no outs in the 5th inning. Wagner (20-4) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Marcus Giles helped Wagner at the plate, he finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, doubling twice, with three runs scored. The final score of the game was 11-0.
