Thursday 9/22/2005: Rob Richie collects 2000th hit against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - Houston's players had every reason to congratulate Rob Richie, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! In 15 years of big league action so far, Rob has compiled a batting average of .285, along with 41 homeruns and 790 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' His hit in the 3rd inning was a single off Paul McClellan.
Thursday 9/22/2005: Oakland's Cruz severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland's rightfielder Nelson R. Cruz will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Oakland and Kansas City. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Cruz collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Oakland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Cruz had suffered a Torn Calf Muscle. Cruz has walked 33 times this year and posts a .340 OBP. While batting .270, 89 for 330, he has driven in 59 runs.
Monday 9/19/2005: Kevin Youkilis out for 6 weeks
FLORIDA - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Florida's first baseman Kevin Youkilis will miss about 6 weeks after being hit by Jason Schmidt in the 1st inning of the game between Florida and St. Louis. Youkilis was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Cheekbone. His season features a batting average of .269 (139 hits in 516 AB), 27 doubles, one triple and 13 taters. Youkilis collected 63 RBI and 78 runs as well.
Monday 9/19/2005: John Smoltz turns in great performance against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cincinnati found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Smoltz 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 93rd shutouts in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Smoltz (25-2) struck out 9 and issued 2 BB, throwing 75 of 128 pitches for strikes. Roger Cedeno helped Smoltz at the plate, he finished 4 for 5. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Monday 9/19/2005: Texas' Everett wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Carl Everett, Texas' starting centerfielder. Carl pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .476 with 4 HR and 13 RBI while slugging 1.143. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Washington's Vladimir Guerrero this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .448 with 15 RBI and slugged 1.069 in 29 at bats.
Saturday 9/17/2005: Toronto's Gerut severely injured
TORONTO - Toronto's players were scared when they had to watch Jody Gerut suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Texas. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Gerut will probaby miss 11 weeks. Broken Foot was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season features a batting average of .270 (112 hits in 415 AB), 22 doubles, 4 triples and 9 taters. Gerut collected 44 RBI and 48 runs as well.

NEW YORK (A) - Minnesota's first baseman Jim Edmonds was in good mood after the game against New York (A), and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Jim collected 444 homeruns and 1366 RBI in 13 seasons. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' His hit in the 3rd inning was a single off Brian Shackelford.
