The Astros went HEAVY pitching in the 2006 draft. If they drafted right, they may have the building blocks for one of the best bullpens in the very near future. Here is how the new Astros break down:
Round 1
SP Mike Leak: a/g/g/b/g, needs to develop another pitch to be an effective starter. A starter duration is a plus. Rated at 57/100 on the top prosects report. Needs some work but has the potential to be a middle of the rotation starter.
CL Zach Britton b/b/b/a/b multiple pitches, above average fastball, should be a backend of the bullpen option. Expect him to take over the closer role once Wagner's terrible contract extension expires.
MR Tony Barnette b/g/g/g/b great clutch performer, needs to force more groundballs, could develop into a long relieve option
Round 2 MR Will Harris b/b/g/g/b average all around reliever but could develop into an end of the bullpen pitcher or MR if his duration improves
MR Mark Melancon g/b/g/g/b End of the rotation guy with above average fastball and slider but needs to develop a 3rd pitch.
The Astros saw bats falling off the board around them so they rolled with the pitching heavy draft and seemed to have the bones to a pretty good bullpen and a nice addition to a future rotation with Mike Leake.
