Phillies Offseason Report
The Phillies arguably had the most productive and active offseason of any HOFFBL team. Let’s break down each deal quickly, and then summarize as a whole and what it might mean for the upcoming season!
RF Nick Markakis (AAA)
Phillies Receive:
SP John Thompson
Verdict: Nick Markakis is an extremely solid OF, but the Phillies had quite a few in the system. They had Grandy and Cummings up in the bigs and already had Kemp waiting in the wings who had a monstrous season in Triple A last season. Giving up Markakis for a potential #2 seemed like a no brainer for the Phightins’.
Verdict: The reality is this was probably better business for Chris in terms of he got something out of nothing when it looked like Edmonds was going to walk regardless. As a true 1 year rental for us…most likely…Edmonds should provide excellent on base while also delivering some power from the top of the order.
LF Alex Gordon (AA)
SP Dontrelle Willis (AAA)
C Jesus Flores (AA)
LF Lew Ford
SP Ted Lilly
PHI 2006 1st Round Pick
PHI 2006 2nd Round Pick
Phillies Receive:
2B Chase Utley
Verdict: Chase Utley is one of the best hitters in HOFFBL so we probably win the deal by default, BUT I think Josh and his team do a nice job of getting quite a few good prospects that could pop. Alex Gordon looks like he’s going to be an excellent 2-way player. Willis needs help, but who knows. Flores is a catching prospect that might be able to pop one day. Plus he got a couple of picks. Back to Chase Utley, though. He is a true 5-tool player in every sense. We hope he will want to re-sign at a fair asking price, but we are willing to do whatever it takes to keep him here.
Verdict: Ken Herndon and Dallas Braden need serious help. The early 2nd round pick has some value, but this feels like we got Brian Giles for very cheap. Factor in that Wakefield comes along to provide better pitching depth for us, and this was certainly a no brainer for us. Giles is locked up for a few seasons, and so I do need him to hold it together.
All in all (including FA)...
IN: 1B Jim Edmonds, 2B Chase Utley, SS Delino DeShields (FA), RF Brian Giles, SP John Thomson, SP Tim Wakefield, and MR Matt Whisenant (FA)
OUT: LF Alex Gordon, SP Dontrelle Willis, C Jesus Flores, LF Lew Ford, SP Ted Lilly, RF Nick Markakis, 2B Rob Mackowiak, CF Todd Dunwoody, MR Ariel Prieto, SP Ken Herndon, and SP Dallas Braden. PHI 2006 1st, PHI 2006 2nd, MIN 2006 2nd, and PHI 2007 2nd Round Picks.
Verdict: The Phillies traded pretty much most of their depth in the farm system while keeping the core of Granderson, Mauer, Kemp, Ben Sheets, Cole Hamels, Chris Young, and Chad Cordero all together. There are some people that believe they can finally dethrone the Braves…which we will see about that. The Braves still need to be very much respected. Our goal was to be competitive this past season which didn’t happen, and also it didn’t help when Mauer went down. This year we are certainly hoping that our flip the switch offseason will result in our first playoff berth in HOFFBL. Let’s see what happens. Be prepared for monthly reports from our squad where we highlight the Phillies, BUT also highlight a minor leaguer who deserves some praise!
Thanks for reading, folks!

Twins will extend Edmonds to 20/1 and at flip, send him to PHI for MIN's 2nd to come back (and send to BOS lol)
