Monday 5/2/2006: Philadelphia's Sheets wins Player of the Week award
It's the 5th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Seattle's centerfielder Matt Holliday. He hit .483 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.034 in 29 at bats. Matt managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Philadelphia's pitcher Ben Sheets had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.72 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .208 against Ben this season. While posting an ERA of 1.53 he went 6-0 in 6 starts, fanning 49 and walking 8 hitters. He has one complete game and one shutout. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's right-hander Ben Sheets is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Houston on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Sheets (6-0) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 78 of 124 pitches for strikes. Philadelphia's second baseman Chase Utley stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, stroking two 2B's, scoring FOUR times. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Sheets. Philadelphia improved its record to 17-9, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits.
Sunday 5/1/2006: Roy Halladay blanks New York (A) with a 2-hitter
NEW YORK (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Roy Halladay is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. Halladay (3-2) struck out 1 and issued 2 BB, throwing 64 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' The hitting star for Chicago (A) was second baseman Roberto Alomar, he went 2 for 3, doubling once, and driving in 3 runs. Chicago (A) improved its record to 14-12, scoring 8 runs on 16 hits.

Paul Wagner couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 4-0 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 34.2 innings of work he allowed just 17 hits while striking out 25, compiling an ERA of just 0.78. Ben Sheets pitched like a legend in April, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He had an ERA of just 1.89 in 38 innings of work in which he struck out 45 hitters. His record in April is 5-0.

The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Edwin Encarnacion, Baltimore's starting shortstop. Edwin went 33 for 92 (.359), while hitting 10 HR and collecting 24 RBI. Dmitri Young of Chicago (N) wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Dmitri went 35 for 96 (.365), while hitting 11 HR and collecting 26 RBI.
Friday 4/29/2006: Los Angeles (N)'s King out for 5 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N) is without its southpaw Ray King for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bucky Jacobsen in a game against Chicago (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season King compiled an ERA of 2.84, going 2-0 in 0 starts. He fanned 18 while giving up 10 hits in 12.2 innings.
