With the calendar turning to May the Marlins had a handful of promotions, here's a quick peek at some prospects who are "movin on up"
SP Homer Bailey -The 20 year old was the Marlins 1st round draft pick in 2004 and after 2 mediocre seasons at A ball was starting to look like a bust, but people
are quick to forget he was still a teenager. After a 4-1 start to this years campaign with a 1.59 ERA and a .71 WHIP, Bailey got the promotion to Fernandina Beach.
He's posting 11K/9 and a 6+ K/BB ratio.
C Salvy Perez -At only 15, the Marlins are clearly fast tracking this years 11th overall draft pick. He dominated A ball hitting .348/.416/.907 with 5 home runs in
just over 100 AB's.
1B Matt Adams -Also a young one at 17, the 21st pick in this years draft posted a .340/.421/.865 stat line at A ball and will now get tested at AA.
SP Scott Olson -One of the bevy of arms the Marlins got in the Adam Eaton deal before 2005 with the Dodgers, Olson was moved up to AA last year and
faired well, this year he's been even better. 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP while posting nearly 15K/9, Olson looks to be knocking on a big league
audition. Between the last 2 years he posted a 3.02 era in AA over 83+ innings. He'll join Destins pitching staff with a potential look at competing for a big
league spot in 2007.
RP Denny Bautista -Another arm that came over in the Eaton deal, had 7 saves with a 2.03/1.05 stat line as the closer for Fernandina Beach, nearly 13 K/9
and more importantly seems to be reigning in the walks, nearly cutting his BB/9 in half from last season. Doesn't necessarily project as a top end pen arm
but he'll get a chance in Destin to see if he can develop any more
1B/DH Jesus Guzman -As intimated in last weeks column, the Marlins couldn't keep Guzman in Destin anymore. .412/.477/1.257 with 9 doubles and 11 homers,
he can't be any worse than what they were getting from Rico Brogna in the DH spot. Brogna was released after a second look from the Marlins at DH in the last
2 years. Hard to think Brogna will find work at this point and most likely will be headed towards retirement after a disappointing major league career. Brogna was
a 1st round pick of the Twins back in 1989 and if this is the end will have ended his career with only 460 major league at bats.
RP Jimmy Gobble -Another major league debut, Gobble is a seven year veteran of the minors but is still only 24. He's posted a 2.89/1.40 in Destin with a 5.6 K/BB
ratio, but his callup is more a result of Mike Venafro's disastrous start. The Marlins brought Venafro back on a one year deal to be the second lefty in the pen. Venafro
was servicable last year, posting a 3.88 ERA, this year has been a nightnmare with a 7.07 era and walking 8 while only striking out 1. Venafro accepted an assignment
to Destin where the Snappers pitching coaches will try to straighten him out. The Marlins aren't in a position to give up on lefties right now so they'll hope he can figure
it out.
