LOS ANGELES (N) - Age doesn't matter. At least Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Tom Gordon shares this opinion. The 38 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Florida, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Gordon (4-3) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 92 pitches. Endy Chavez provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Gordon needed as he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun. The final score of the game was 3-0.

Oakland's rightfielder Nelson R. Cruz had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Nelson R. went 11 for 22 (.500), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 7 RBI. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Arizona's first baseman Carlos Pena. He hit .500 with 11 RBI and slugged .857 in 28 at bats.
Saturday 5/14/2006: Miguel Batista dominates Detroit, gives up just 2 hits
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Miguel Batista is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Detroit on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Batista (4-3) struck out 3 and walked none, throwing 65 of 101 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was first baseman Marcus Thames, he finished 1 for 4, homering once, and driving in 3 runs. Chicago (A) scored 8 runs on 9 hits.
Friday 5/13/2006: Cincinnati's Beltran out for 6 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's centerfielder Carlos Beltran hurt himself in the 1st inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Carlos Beltran will miss at least 6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Hip. Surgery will be performed next week. Carlos is hitting .250 this year, with 35 hits in 140 at bats. He has driven in 30 runs, slugging .486.
Friday 5/13/2006: San Francisco's Barber out for 5 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's right-hander Brian Barber suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Philadelphia he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Brian has a record of 1-3 this season, with an ERA of 5.52. In 29.1 Innings he was able to strike out 24 batters.
Wednesday 5/11/2006: Ryan Rupe (ATL) will miss 5 weeks
ATLANTA - When it rains, it pours. Atlanta's right-hander Ryan Rupe will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Diego where he left the field in the 1st inning. Atlanta wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Rupe had suffered a Strained Elbow Ligament. Opposing players hit .252 against Ryan this season. While posting an ERA of 1.94 he went 5-1 in 9 starts, fanning 37 and walking 9 hitters. Ryan has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 4th in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!

BALTIMORE - Baltimore's ace Kerry Wood suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 7th of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. This season Wood compiled an ERA of 1.17, going 4-0 in 8 starts. He fanned 62 while giving up 34 hits in 61.1 innings. He has 2 complete games and one shutout.
Wednesday 5/11/2006: Frank E. Thomas stars with 3000th career hit
SEATTLE - Seattle's first baseman Frank E. Thomas already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 3000th career hit. Along with his 3000 hits, Frank E. collected 505 homeruns and 1869 RBI in 16 seasons. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' He hit a single in the 8th off Scott Williamson for number 3000. The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
