It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Oakland's leftfielder Bobby Abreu. In 17 at bats he hit .471 with 4 HR and 10 RBI. Bobby is hitting .239 this year, with 75 hits in 314 at bats. He has driven in 63 runs, slugging .605. He's 8th in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! The National League's best player of the week was Arizona's Carlos Pena, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Carlos pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .625 with 5 HR and 12 RBI while slugging 1.688. His season features a batting average of .312 (93 hits in 298 AB), 15 doubles, 2 triples and 29 bombs. Friday 7/1/2006: Minnesota's Radke earns Pitcher of the Month award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Minnesota's Brad Radke. His ERA of just 2.39 helped him to a 6-0 record in June. He worked 49 innings, striking out 21 hitters while walking 6. Brad has a record of 12-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.96. In 127.2 Innings he was able to strike out 60 batters. He has 5 complete games and one shutout. He's 8th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Milwaukee's pitcher Chien-Ming Wang. His ERA of just 0.84 helped him to a 3-0 record in June. He worked 21.1 innings, striking out 10 hitters while walking 8. In 15 starts this year Chien-Ming struck out 39 batters in 104 innings of work. His ERA is 3.20, his record 6-6. Wednesday 6/29/2006: Carlos Pena on fire, crushes three
ARIZONA - Arizona beat Chicago (N) 6-5, but that was not the real story of the game. Carlos Pena was, as he went deep three times. A pitch from Vicente Padilla in the 4th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 389 feet from home plate in right field. In the 6th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Vicente Padilla. A 450 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd bomb, a solo homerun off Vicente Padilla in the 8th inning. The game was tied, 5-5, after the blast. Carlos collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring three runs and driving in 4 runs. His homerun total this year is 28, along with 69 RBI.
Wednesday 6/29/2006: Bernie F. Williams punishes Kansas City with five hits
CHICAGO (A) - On Wednesday, Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Bernie F. Williams displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Kansas City, punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Matt Morris in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 480 feet from home plate. The game was tied, 3-3, after the blast. A 428 foot drive to center field marked his 4th hit, a two-run homerun off Ugueth Urbina in the 9th inning. That one tied it at 7 runs apiece. He had singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) , in the 7th inning and in the 10th inning (one RBI). Bernie F. scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He is hitting .344 this season, with 12 HR and 51 RBI. Chicago (A) scored 9 runs on 16 hits.
Wednesday 6/29/2006: Jon Lester (CLE) will miss 6 weeks
CLEVELAND - Cleveland is without its lefty Jon Lester for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Freddy Sanchez in a game against Oakland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 5.42 helped him to a 8-7 record this year. He struck out 87 and walked 68 in 98 innings.
Monday 6/27/2006: Oliver Perez pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's southpaw Oliver Perez is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Perez 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 3rd shutouts in his career. Perez (7-6) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 2, throwing 119 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Nomar Garciaparra helped Perez at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring 2 runs and collecting 4 RBI. Pittsburgh scored 13 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 6/27/2006: Player of the Week honors go to Anderson and Hyzdu
Garret Anderson from Kansas City wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Arizona's rightfielder Adam Hyzdu had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Sunday 6/26/2006: Kazuhiro Kiyohara collects 2000th hit against Kansas City
KANSAS CITY - Kazuhiro Kiyohara got a standing ovation from 41803 fans in Kansas City, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. With two outs in the 2nd inning, Kazuhiro drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 15 years of big league action so far, Kazuhiro has compiled a batting average of .252, along with 387 homeruns and 1271 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'
