HOFFBL All Star Break Report
HOFFBL Team Awards
Best Team: Arizona Diamondbacks (60-21)
Notes: An outstanding job by Galo as he continues to push chips in and still has one of the premier hitting prospects in his system (thanks to the franchise reservation rule) in Paul Goldschmidt. This team has scored the most runs and has also given up the fewest. Yes, Chris’ Twins have the better record, but it’s kinda clear to see that Zona is the best overall team right this minute.
Worst Team: Tampa Bay Devil Rays (19-62)
Notes: This team is absolute ass. No two ways about it. They score the least amount of runs, and are like 3rd worst in terms of pitching. The worst part about this group? Their system sucks as well. This is a longgggggggg rebuild. Just a bad franchise. No reason to talk about it more.
AL Best Farm System: Cleveland Indians/Chicago White Sox (both around 115 Points)
Notes: Probably a cop out to list both here, but I could see an argument for either side. White Sox have a ton of young tantalizing arms. The Indians have a few bats to go along with a potential front line starter in Edwin Jackson. I think there wasn’t a clear-cut answer here. NL had way more quality in the farm systems.
NL Best Farm System: San Francisco Giants (226 Points)
Notes: I mean they nearly double the next best team…are ya kidding me? Now, these things aren’t always the best assessment in terms of ranking systems, but the Giants have been loaded for quite some time, and with the 10 year rewards being spent…this is a damn good one. Looking forward to seeing how Spence puts this roster together.
HOFFBL Awards
AL MVP: 1B Miguel Cabrera (Tigers)
Notes: Tight race between Manny and Miggy, but I ended up going with Miggy. Both are big time power bats, but they don’t have any speed whatsoever…the deciding factor was a little bit of defense, and me valuing Miggy’s bat a tad more. Miggy is 1st in runs created, 2nd in OPS (to Manny), and just about top 5 in every major cat. Tigers are 2nd in the division, but where would they be without Miggy? I think Twins would still be a playoff team without Manny. Anyway, fun debate!
NL MVP: C Carlos Ruiz (Cubs)
Notes: Chooch was at some point around the 1.200 OPS mark. He is now coming back down to earth some, but with an OPS of 1.143 at the catching position, I think this one is a no brainer. I also think the closest bat to him is Carlos Lee, and he plays at Coors, and I’m sorry that takes some points away. Also the Cubs have a better record. Outstanding year for Chooch. My real life Phillies are pretty dang good here.
AL Cy Young: SP Paul Wagner (Mariners)
Notes: Wagner leads the AL in ERA and WHIP by a significant margin. He has just 10 wins which is fine, but is below some others who have gotten better run support. Outstanding pitcher for the defending champs.
NL Cy Young: SP Ben Sheets (Phillies)
Notes: It’s about damn time we surrounded him with a team because he’s been CY Young quality for the past couple of seasons. With Chan Ho slowing down just a tad, the door is now open. With an ERA of 1.88 and a record of 12-2, this seems like the pick. He also is 2nd in strikeouts in the NL. A sensational season by Mr. Sheets.
AL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Eric Gagne (Athletics)
Notes: Tough one between him and Mariano Rivera, but I gotta give the slight edge to Gagne due to having a heavier workload. Will be interesting to see how this one shakes out!
NL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Jose Valverde (Braves)
Notes: Tight one between him and Strop, but ultimately his numbers were just a tad better. Valverde has been an instrumental piece as the Braves are going to play in a ton of tight games due to elite pitching, but absolutely poor hitting.
