Monday 7/18/2006: Pittsburgh's Pujols wins Player of the Week award
Edwin Encarnacion from Baltimore wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 23 at bats he hit .391 with 5 HR and 9 RBI. Encarnacion has hit 24 taters this year while batting .313. He adds 9 doubles, along with 68 runs scored. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Albert Pujols, Pittsburgh's starting third baseman. Albert was on fire, hitting .500 with 3 HR and 11 RBI.
Saturday 7/16/2006: Chris Carpenter fires 2-hitter against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - Kansas City's right-hander Chris Carpenter is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cleveland on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 23rd time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Carpenter (11-6) fanned 5 and walked 1, throwing 119 pitches. Victor Martinez provided Kansas City with the offense Carpenter needed as he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, with 3 RBI. Kansas City improved its record to 52-39, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.
Wednesday 7/13/2006: Cleveland's Donnelly severely injured
CLEVELAND - When it rains, it pours. Cleveland's right-hander Brendan Donnelly will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Seattle where he left the field in the 9th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Tricep Tendon which will require surgery. Brendan has a record of 0-2 this season, with an ERA of 7.23. In 42.1 Innings he was able to strike out 24 batters.
