Monday 8/8/2006: Sweeney (SEA) and Rowand (WAS) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mike Sweeney, Seattle's starting catcher. Mike pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 3 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .917. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Washington's centerfielder Aaron Rowand. Aaron was on fire, hitting .571 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. Rowand has hit 10 homeruns this year while batting .308. He adds 26 doubles, along with 83 runs scored.
Thursday 8/4/2006: Jason Schmidt blanks Los Angeles (N) with a 1-hitter
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Jason Schmidt is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Los Angeles (N) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Schmidt 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 4th shutouts in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Schmidt (11-8) struck out 3 and issued 5 BB, throwing 73 of 120 pitches for strikes. Yadier Molina provided St. Louis with the offense Schmidt needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring two runs. The final score of the game was 8-0.
Thursday 8/4/2006: St. Louis' Phillips out for 5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' season took a blow when Brandon Phillips suffered a serious injury in the game against Los Angeles (N). He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Phillips will probaby miss 5 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week. This year Phillips drove in 37 and scored 52 runs while batting .262 with 5 taters.
Wednesday 8/3/2006: Mike Sweeney socks five hits for Seattle
LOS ANGELES (A) - Seattle's catcher Mike Sweeney once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Los Angeles (A)'s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Wednesday. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Alan Embree. His 3rd hit, off Alan Embree in the 4th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. He had singles in the 3rd inning , in the 7th inning (one RBI) and in the 9th (one RBI). Mike scored 6 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! He now has a total of 92 hits this season, accounting for a .260 batting average. The final score of the game was 35-2.
Wednesday 8/3/2006: Seattle's Torii Hunter mashes six hits
LOS ANGELES (A) - Torii Hunter punished Los Angeles (A)'s pitching today, collecting six hits in 7 AB. That definitely helped Seattle, they won the game 35 to 2. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 3rd inning (one RBI) , in the 5th inning , in the 6th (one RBI) , in the 9th (two RBIs) and in the 9th inning (two RBIs). Torii did drive in 6 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 112 hits in 357 at bats, resulting in a .314 batting average.
Tuesday 8/2/2006: Robin Ventura stars with 500th career homerun
CHICAGO (A) - Robin Ventura got a standing ovation from 45450 fans in Chicago (A), who witnessed his historic 500th career homerun. Perhaps his best year so far was 1998 where he hit .330 with 46 homeruns and 145 RBI. Robin hit 30+ homeruns in a season 10 times, hitting 40 bombs 4 times. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' His monumental drive, a three-run homerun off Cliff Politte in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in left field. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Monday 8/1/2006: Player of the Week honors go to Young and Huff
Mike B. Young wins his 5th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Mike B. went 14 for 28 (.500), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 6 RBI. The National League's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Aubrey Huff, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He hit .458 with 15 RBI and slugged 1.167 in 24 at bats.
Monday 8/1/2006: Nen (MIN) and Martinez (LAN) win monthly pitcher award
Minnesota's Robb Nen had a terrific July, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 6-0 in July and finished the month with an ERA of 1.61. He struck out 39 in 50.1 innings. Robb got two complete game shutouts as well! In 24 starts this year Robb struck out 158 batters in 188.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.05, his record 17-3. Robb has pitched 2 shutouts and 4 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Pedro Martinez pitched like a legend in July, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He started 6 games in July, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.46 in 49.1 innings. Pedro fanned 53 hitters. Pedro pitched a shutout as well. Pedro has a record of 14-1 this season, with an ERA of 2.05. In 188.2 Innings he was able to strike out 188 batters. Pedro has pitched 3 shutouts and 9 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! MILWAUKEE - Miguel Ojeda hits 'em where they ain't. Milwaukee certainly agrees as Atlanta's catcher unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 4 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 448 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. His 5th hit, off Mike J. Grace in the 9th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. Number 6 in the 9th inning accounted for a three-run double. He collected singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 2nd and in the 4th inning (one RBI). Miguel did drive in 8 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 103 hits in 339 at bats, resulting in a .304 batting average. Atlanta scored 23 runs on 23 hits.
