Phillies July Report
Record: 19-5
Home: 10-2
Road: 9-3
Positive Team Stat: BBs–387 (3rd)
Notes: As a team, we find a way to get on base, then steal a base, and also can hit a dinger. This offense has pretty much been that way the entire season. The improved plate discipline has been fun to watch. Only Jim Edmonds is in the top 10 for walks (ranked 4th currently). Only Chase Utley is top 10 in OBP (ranked 8th). Even still, there could be improvements.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Average–.274 (13th)
Notes: The batting average has actually improved some, and yet it still feels like we aren’t hitting at a level that might be good enough come postseason time. That’s my only concern, but we also swipe bases at a level that is unmatched. I don’t know what the all time record is for a team, but I feel like we are having one of those seasons. It’s been fun. Anyway, the boys need to hit a tad better if we really wanna make a run at this thing.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 2B Chase Utley
July Stats: .372/.444/.698/1.142 OPS 9 2Bs 2 3Bs 5 HRs 18 RBIs 18 Runs 7 BBs 8 Ks
Notes: Chase Utley has moved into the leadoff spot and has not looked back. He has gotten on base at such a high clip while also delivering some nice pop. He really is the complete package, and it honestly might be his spot to lose at this point. Dynamic in all facets of the game, what an absolute stud.
Best Pitcher: SP Cole Hamels or SP Ben Sheets
July Stats: 5 Starts 3-0 1.67 ERA 27 IP 15 Hs 5 ERs 7 BBs 28 Ks
Notes: Ben Sheets, Tim Wakefield, and John Thomson were all worthy here. Seriously. The boys dominated on the mound aside from Chris R. Young who could’ve been better. Anyway, Cole Hamels gets the nod here. His ludicrous WHIP and absolute efficiency deserves the call here. He has officially arrived, and he will be a massive piece moving forward. Remember, he’s only 22 years old.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: CL JP Howell (AAA)
Notes: JP Howell has been doing his thing down in Triple A. A 2.59 ERA with 18 saves is certainly nice to see. He’s a guy that ultimately might get a look at some point, but he will need to improve his control if he wants to get to the next level. If he can do that, then look out!
