Monday 8/22/2006: Philadelphia's Curtis Granderson hits for the cycle
PHILADELPHIA - Curtis Granderson led Philadelphia to a 7-3 win over Washington by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A single in the 2nd off C.J. Nitkowski accounted for his 1st hit. In the 5th inning he belted a double off C.J. Nitkowski. In the 7th inning he unloaded a RBI triple off Kyle Lohse. His 4th hit, a two-run homerun off Jose Acevedo in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in center field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Curtis scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .271. He's now the 126th player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 7/9/2005, Wilton Guerrero was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Monday 8/22/2006: Boston's Jeff Cirillo gets milestone hit
BOSTON - Jeff Cirillo got a standing ovation from 41478 fans in Boston, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Jeff collected 44 homeruns and 865 RBI in 13 seasons. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!' He hit a single in the 3rd off Jon Lester for number 2000.
Monday 8/22/2006: Lee and Hardy win Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's first baseman Derrek Lee. Lee helped his team with an average of .417 and 12 RBI in 24 at bats. Derrek is hitting .261 this year, with 119 hits in 456 at bats. He has driven in 86 runs, slugging .539. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s J.J. Hardy this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .440 and hit .391, while driving in 11 runs. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. His season numbers are: .293 AVG, 125 hits, 20 doubles, 2 triples and 21 homeruns, along with 84 RBI and 73 runs scored.
Friday 8/19/2006: New York (N)'s Kelly Johnson slams six hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - Kelly Johnson hits 'em where they ain't. Los Angeles (N) certainly agrees as New York (N)'s second baseman unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Adam Eaton in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 436 feet from home plate. A pitch from Clay Condrey in the 7th inning left his bat for a RBI double. He had singles in the 1st inning , in the 2nd , in the 6th inning (one RBI) and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Kelly scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .348. New York (N) improved its record to 47-77, scoring 13 runs on 23 hits.
Thursday 8/18/2006: Russell Branyan on fire, laces five hits
DETROIT - Detroit's rightfielder Russell Branyan once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Tampa Bay's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Thursday. His 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off Mark Prior in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 429 feet from home plate. A 325 foot drive to right field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Mark Prior in the 4th inning. Number 4 in the 6th inning accounted for a double. He had singles in the 1st and in the 7th (one RBI). Russell scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .274. Detroit improved its record to 81-42, scoring 14 runs on 18 hits.
Wednesday 8/17/2006: Jeff Weaver turns in great performance against San Diego
CHICAGO (N) - Jeff Weaver took the mound and never left. And San Diego hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (N)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 13 career shutouts in 187 games started. Weaver (16-8) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 111 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Chicago (N)'s second baseman J.J. Hardy got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting two dingers, scoring twice and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Weaver. Chicago (N) scored 9 runs on 12 hits.

LOS ANGELES (A) - Los Angeles (A)'s left-hander Scott Karl is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Chicago (A) on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. Karl (9-14) fanned 5 and walked none, throwing 103 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Todd Hundley provided Los Angeles (A) with the offense Karl needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, with 3 RBI. Los Angeles (A) scored 4 runs on 6 hits.
Tuesday 8/16/2006: Chris Capuano pitches 2-hit shutout against Cleveland
TEXAS - Chris Capuano had some fun again. Cleveland hitters did not. Texas' left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 88 games started. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Josh Hamilton singled with two outs in the 5th inning. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Capuano (11-9) struck out an astounding 14 and walked none, throwing 73 of 113 pitches for strikes. Ramon Vazquez provided Texas with the offense Capuano needed as he went 2 for 5, blasting a homerun, and collecting 5 RBI. Texas scored 13 runs on 16 hits.
