Thursday 9/1/2006: Pittsburgh's Perez named Pitcher of the Month
A.J. Burnett couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 46 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 46 innings. His ERA in August was 1.11. A.J. pitched a shutout as well. A.J. has a record of 21-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.40. In 221.2 Innings he was able to strike out 224 batters. A.J. has pitched 2 shutouts and 7 complete games. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Oliver Perez pitched like a legend in August, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Baltimore's Derrek Lee this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Derrek pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .358 with 9 and 26 RBI while slugging .697. Lee has hit for a .266 average this season. He has 64 extra base hits along with 262 total bases, resulting in a .537 slugging percentage. Chicago (N)'s second baseman J.J. Hardy had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. J.J. pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .360 with 10 and 31 RBI while slugging .720. While compiling an on base percentage of .354, J.J. hit .300 and slugged .502. He has collected 92 runs batted in this year.
Monday 8/29/2006: Carl Everett uncorks six hits against Oakland
OAKLAND - Carl Everett is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A double off Kirk Rueter in the 2nd inning accounted for his 1st hit. His 3rd hit was a triple off Jeff Farnsworth in the 6th inning. Number 6 in the 9th inning accounted for a RBI double. He collected singles in the 4th (one RBI) , in the 6th (two RBIs) and in the 7th inning (one RBI). Carl scored 5 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 146 hits in 477 at bats, resulting in a .306 batting average. Texas scored 25 runs on 26 hits.
Monday 8/29/2006: Bobby Higginson on fire, laces five hits
TAMPA BAY - Boston's rightfielder Bobby Higginson once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Tampa Bay's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Monday. His 1st hit, off Mark Prior in the 2nd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. A 335 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off Mark Prior in the 3rd inning. A pitch from Kurt Birkins in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run double. He had singles in the 5th and in the 8th inning . Bobby did drive in 6 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 127 hits this season, accounting for a .261 batting average. The final score of the game was 25-10.

TAMPA BAY - Jimmy Rollins hits 'em where they ain't. Tampa Bay certainly agrees as Boston's shortstop unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 5 in the 6th inning accounted for a two-run double. He had singles in the 3rd , in the 3rd (two RBIs) , in the 4th inning (one RBI) , in the 5th (one RBI) and in the 7th inning . Jimmy did drive in 6 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .307 this season, with 6 HR and 57 RBI. The final score of the game was 25-10.

Tampa Bay's second baseman Aaron Hill had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .571 with 4 RBI and slugged 1.048 in 21 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .365, Aaron hit .333 and slugged .517. He has collected 53 runs batted in this year. He's 4th in the American League in batting! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Jeff Weaver this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Jeff went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.59, while fanning 18 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .213 against Jeff this season. Saturday 8/27/2006: Vladimir Guerrero stars with 2000th career hit
CINCINNATI - Washington's players had every reason to congratulate Vladimir Guerrero, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With no outs in the 8th inning, Vladimir drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Vladimir collected 350 homeruns and 1145 RBI in 10 seasons. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!'
Thursday 8/25/2006: Arthur Rhodes shuts out San Francisco on one hit
SAN FRANCISCO - Arizona's lefty Arthur Rhodes is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Francisco on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 30th time he has done it in his career. Rhodes (18-7) struck out an astounding 14 and walked 2, throwing 86 of 132 pitches for strikes. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Arizona's centerfielder Vernon Wells collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, stroking two 2B's, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rhodes. The final score of the game was 11-0.
Thursday 8/25/2006: Toronto's McMichael severely injured
TORONTO - When it rains, it pours. Toronto's right-hander Greg McMichael will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Detroit where he left the field in the 9th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, McMichael was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Herniated Disc Back. Opposing players hit .215 against Greg this season.
