A group of young Astros spent the off season with the Savannah Bananas to learn new tools of the trade. Super Utility Man Billy Butler, AAA SP Zach Kroenke, AA 2B Carlos Hernandez, and new draftees SP Julian Teheran and RF Jayson Heyward spent the time after the draft working out with the Savannah baseball freak show and the extra baseball time seems to have paid dividends.
Experts noticed a definitive talent increase with the youngsters that participated in the baseball anarchy and each one credits something different for their improvement. Billy Butler claims that all of the distractions around him helped him lock in, whether it be the pitching battery breaking out into song and dance with the umpire or a national anthem standoff that lasted well through the game and into the night.
Zach Kroenke admits that throwing the occasional pitch from second base is difficult but it has helped him avoid homeruns better. Kroenke said, "If you aren't giving up dingers from second base, moving back to the pitching mound makes it all seem so much easier."
Carlos Hernandez reached into his Latin roots and claims that the dancing helped improve his hip action which seems to be leading to an increase in power.
Teheran and Heyward were absolutely amazed by their first professional baseball experience. It seems like they are both hoping that professional baseball is like this forever.
