--Boston, MA
Boston Red Sox fans rejoiced during this opening stretch of games. After flops the last two years in 74 and 83 win teams, the Red Sox front office responded by going big. Moving Johan Santana for a package including Daniel Murphy and Dexter Fowler, the team looked to be in sell mode. That quickly changed when they turned around hours later the next day and shipped out Daniel Murphy, Mark Trumbo, and several picks and a package of other players were shipped to Pittsburgh.
From Pittsburgh came a surge of major league talent from a club that couldn't seem to find a buyer for the talent and chose to blow it up for a big package to get the other pieces moving too. Reigning NL MVP Johnny Damon has surged back into Boston, where he was a fan favorite during his last stint with the team. Damon blitzed the AL in his first two weeks, hitting 4 HR, with 21 RBI. Even more impressively, he's hitting .390 with a 1.141 OPS. You couldn't ask for a better start for a repeat performance. Damon hopes to play his days out in Boston on his road to Cooperstown.
Starting Pitcher Jake Peavy, a guy the Red Sox have had their eye on for a long time was the other major piece Boston received from Pittsburgh. Sporting a 3.09 ERA with a 2-1 record to start the year, grabbing him to upgrade on an underwhelming first two years of Santana is paying off in the offense heavy Fenway environment only giving up 3 runs in each home appearance so far. Konerko and Hudson have been important pieces to past Pittsburgh teams, so Boston expects them to turn around their luke warm first outings.
Not finished Boston made two separate trades with the league commissioner commandeered California Angels after the owner was sucked into a time vortex and suddenly appeared in history in all books as the long time GM of the Boston Braves. Scientists remain baffled. From California came SP Brian Rose, MR Scott Sauerbeck, and former MVP Ken Griffey Jr. Griffey has seemed reinvigorated by this fun clubhouse with youth like Rollins, Zambrano, and Pedroia. After the first two weeks, he's hitting .346 with 1 HR and 11 RBI, with a .923 OPS and 5 steals.
On the FA end, Jim Edmonds was a big get for another veteran presence alongside Griffey, and at . 291 with 3 HR, 7 RBI, and a. 900 OPS, he's still got plenty of juice in the tank. SP Miguel Batista came in on a value contract to fill the #5 hole, and is doing a serviceable job so far. This allowed struggling SP Victor Alvarez to move to the pen, and Alvarez has responded with the best two weeks of his career in the long reliever role. Management hopes he finds continued success.
In house is where the true value of the team still lies, with SP Carlos Zambrano, DH Lance Berkman, 2B Dustin Pedroia, and SS Jimmy Rollins all putting on stellar opening performances that exemplify a team firing on all cylinders. Their performances could fill an entire other article, and it will!
