Monday 4/25/2007: San Francisco's Thome wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Carlos Zambrano, one of Boston's best starting pitchers. Carlos went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 16 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! In 5 starts this year Carlos struck out 32 batters in 40.1 innings of work. His ERA is 0.89, his record 4-0. Carlos has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. Sunday 4/24/2007: Tony Saunders dominates Pittsburgh, gives up just 2 hits
ARIZONA - Arizona's lefty Tony Saunders is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 7th time he has done it in his career. Saunders (3-0) struck out 6 and walked 3, throwing 77 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Vernon Wells helped Saunders at the plate, he went 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. Arizona scored 7 runs on 10 hits.
Sunday 4/24/2007: Boston's Johnny Damon laces 2000th career hit
TORONTO - Boston's players had every reason to congratulate Johnny Damon, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 6th inning, Johnny drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Johnny collected 287 homeruns and 1117 RBI in 12 seasons. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!'
Saturday 4/23/2007: Carlos Zambrano turns in great performance against Toronto
TORONTO - Carlos Zambrano had some fun again. Toronto hitters did not. Boston's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 94 games started. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Zambrano (4-0) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 7. Boston's designated hitter Lance Berkman got 1 hit in 5 AB, blasting a homerun, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Zambrano. The final score of the game was 9-0.
Friday 4/22/2007: Houston's Cordova severely injured
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Francisco Cordova will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Atlanta on Friday. Cordova was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Tricep Muscle. In 4 starts this year Francisco struck out 13 batters in 19 innings of work. His ERA is 6.63, his record 0-2.
Thursday 4/21/2007: Philadelphia has no chance in a 1-hitter by Ubaldo Jimenez
MILWAUKEE - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Milwaukee's Ubaldo Jimenez did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Philadelphia. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Jimenez (1-2) struck out 3 and issued 2 BB, throwing 57 of 88 pitches for strikes. Milwaukee's third baseman David Wright got 4 hits in 4 AB, scoring three times and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Jimenez.
