Phillies 2007 April Report
Record: 19-6
Home: 8-4
Road: 11-2
Positive Team Stat: HR Allowed–10 (1st)
Notes: Our biggest strength this year is most likely keeping the ball in the ballpark. Last year it was a relentless approach with wreaking havoc on the basepaths (which eventually broke a team stolen base record). With elite pitching that features Ben Sheets, Cole Hamels, John Thomson, Chris Young, etc…no wonder why this team is so elite at minimizing HRs. Runs will always be hard to come by when you play our Phillies.
Negative Team Stat: HRs–.28 (12th)
Notes: By the same token, we have quite a bit of pop in our lineup, and yet the power has been disappointing thus far. Scott Rolen, Curtis Granderson, Chase Utey, and Matt Kemp must offer more than their combined 10 dingers. I think it’ll turn around relatively soon, but man…a tad annoying in the early goings.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: DH Brian Giles
Playoff Stats: .333/.409/.588/.997 OPS 6 2Bs 1 3Bs 6 HRs 24 RBIs 22 Runs 13 BBs 12 Ks
Notes: Brian Giles was sensational. Russ Davis gave him a run for his money, but Giles continues to find ways to get it done. With his ability to get on base while also generating power, he had a huge month in carrying a Phillies offense that looks to be much better moving forward!
Best Pitcher: SP Bobby Madritsch
Playoff Stats: 5 Starts 4-0 2.50 ERA 39.2 IP 36 Hs 11 ERs 12 BBs 22 Ks
Notes: Bobby who!? If you told me Bobby M would be our best pitcher in any month, I’d be probably laugh at you. Having said that, he has really done a hell of a job. He will eat up innings for our squad, but if he can limit the amount of runs he gives up, he’s going to be a really nice depth guy for us. Really impressed by him.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: 3B Casey McGehee (AA)
Notes: Whenever you hit over .400 with an OBP that’s also better than .500, then you deserve a shout out! McGehee continues to deliver in Triple A, and he’ll eventually get his call up to the majors. Either way, it’s nice to see his performance thus far!
