The first month of the 2007 season is behind us as we take our next look at what is going on in the Astros farm system. The last time we checked, AAA had a lot of pitching developing to do, AA had just welcomed a bunch of newly drafted youngsters and A ball was a ghost town for talent.
Billy Butler received a talent boost since our last report, following a solid ST and a great opening sim, Butler's eye has improved and his ability to avoid Ks has improved to brilliant. Zach Britton's month has been the polar opposite of that. Zach took a pretty bad talent hit in the last sim. The word reached Houston shortly after they made the decision to rain points in pursuit of two 2nd round picks. While not the ideal situation, it has motivated the writing team to churn out more points. The talent hit looks to be reversed relatively quickly.
Because of Zach Britton's developmental issues, 16 2B Cesar Hernandez worked his way up to the organizations #10 spec as he continues to tear the cover off the ball, hitting .371 in AA. The team faces a decision, do they send Hernandez to AAA or keep him together with the 2007 draft class and allow them to develop as a unit and promote them together? Mark Melancon continues to shine in AA as well. Maybe the solution will be to move the pair together to AAA and wait as the other AA core Children of Tomorrow develop. Matt Capps continues to wait in AAA for an opportunity at the majors. That opportunity may come sooner than expected if Villareal and Mattes continue to struggle in The Show.
Julio Teheran may be facing a demotion as he continues to carry an ERA just under 10 after the first month of the season. However, fellow first round draft pick Jason Heyward seems to be getting use to minor league life as his batting average is a solid .281 and seems to be headed on a positive trajectory.
CF Hernan is killing the ball, hitting .319 but the coaching staff is looking for him to cut down on his strikeout rate of right around 25%. LF Avisail Garcia and C Rupp continues to be a solid prospects and their current numbers are screaming at management to invest those points.
Check back in June to see if Houston can reclaim their #18 farm system ranking after dropping to #20 this month due to Zach Britton forgetting how to pitch.
