The Astros continued their pattern of dropping 2/3 to winning teams but somehow remain 1 game back in the middle of May. Former manager, Skitty, came out of anger management on Friday evening and was asked about the trend. She said, "I tried to tell them that math is useless. They keep trying to rationalize the irrational. I will have no further comments on the team moving forward."
The pitching staff showed some cracks this sim. Arizona sent Bronson Arroyo to the showers so fast that he had shampoo in his hair before the Astros came to bat in the second inning. The St Louis series was as exciting as it was advertised but it was RHP Derek Lowe getting the win during the series, not the lefties. Cliff Lee pitched well enough to win, giving up 2 runs over 8.2 innings, but only got 1 run i support. Derek Lowe won game 2 pitching 4 hit shutout baseball into the 8th before turning it over to the bullpen. The wheels fell of in the 6th inning of game 3. The bullpen steadied the ship but the offense couldn't get anything going late.
Jack Wilson seems to have starting to get comfortable in his new uniform, going 7/20 over the last 5 games. His game is getting hits and getting on base. Over March and April he was hitting a terrible .190. So far in May his average is .313 with OBP of over .800. That being said, Pat Burrell seems to be headed in the opposite direction, hitting .264 to start the season but has been lost at the plate in May, sporting a .128 avg in May. Mike Lieberthal continues to struggle and it might be time to give him a sim off.
The bullpen took a ding losing MR Matt Mantei for 7 weeks to a fractured elbow. This will be the second major injury in 3 sims for the Astros, yet they continue to hang around in Wrestlemania NL Central. Joe Price will have to find a bullpen solution and quick as the Astros return to the start of their rotation and need wins against a rebuilding or retooling Pirates team.
I don't know if the league has a recorded history of consecutive sims where a team has remained 1 game back, or in the Cardinal's case tied, but this has to be getting into that territory.
