Monday 5/23/2007: Wooten and Fullmer win Player of the Week award
Shawn Wooten from Texas wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 26 at bats he hit .423 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 10 game hitting streak right now. St. Louis' first baseman Brad Fullmer had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Fullmer helped his team with an average of .556 and 13 RBI in 27 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Brad has gone 51 for 172 (.297) this season, hitting 13 longballs and driving in 33 runs. He has scored 33 runs on his own. He's 8th in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Friday 5/20/2007: Carlos Villanueva pitches 1-hit shutout against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Pittsburgh's right-hander Carlos Villanueva is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. Villanueva (4-5) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 3, throwing 123 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Pittsburgh's first baseman Alex Ramirez finished 3 for 5, scoring twice with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Villanueva. Pittsburgh scored 12 runs on 20 hits.
Tuesday 5/17/2007: Shane Victorino nabs five hits against Milwaukee
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Shane Victorino once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Milwaukee's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Tuesday. His 1st hit, off Carlos Pulido in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. The game was tied, 1-1, after the blast. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Tim H. Corcoran. Number 4 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 392 feet, cleared the wall in left field. He had singles in the 2nd inning and in the 8th . Shane scored 4 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .308. Chicago (N) scored 14 runs on 16 hits.
