The Astros took 2/3 from the Cubs and then swept the Marlins. The team is in position to take 3/4 from Cincy to get the summer months started right.
To pick up where the last sim left off, Derek Lowe struggled through 3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits in the decisive game 3 against the Cubbies. Moylan and Villanueva each contributed 2 innings before Frasor came in to get the final 5 outs to get the 16th of his league saving 20 saves. If there is a turning point in this Astro season, this could be it as the bats seemingly woke up scoring 1 in the first, 3 in the 5th, 2 in the 7th, and 1 in the 8th for what appeared on paper a comfortable win to get back to 4 games of the Cubs. If you look deeper, this could be the game where the bats finally started to found a pulse as Nieves, Burrell, and Ford all hit longballs to secure the comeback win. Jack Wilson also showed signs of waking up in this game, winning POG after going 4-5 with an RBI after dropping to the #2 spot with Lou Ford batting lead off.
Derek Lowe was able to bounce back with a bad start to go 7 innings but was unable to get the win against Cincy as the bullpen gave up 7 runs during the final 2 innings to blow a 2-0 lead. Bronson Arroyo did not fair so well after pitching well against the Cubs he got beat up on pretty badly giving up 5 runs through 6 against the Marlins. Fortunately, the bats showed up and Houston was able to pull out a 10-8 victory. Cliff Lee was also able to put a bad Cubs game behind him and went 8 innings against Cincy to get the win. Julio Santana has been quietly solid over the last 4 starts, pitching into the 7th inning in all of his starts, allowing 9 runs over the last 26 innings. He was able to get wins against Cincy and Florida during the last sim after taking a rough loss in his previous start and a no decision for a game the Astros would go on to win.
Dontrelle Willis pitched well in his second ML start pitching into the 8th allowing only 2 runs to get the win against his rl team.
There was a pretty disappointed feeling after the last sim but a few tweaks may have been just what the lineup needed. The Astros play one more game against the Reds before starting a 3 game series in Philly. The Philly series is likely to be the Biased Prediction article. Hopefully, this sim was the turning point for the Astros as the calendar turns to June, at a minimum it changed the attitude in the clubhouse.
