Phillies 2007 May Report
Record: 10-19
Home: 4-13
Road: 6-6
Positive Team Stat: Steals–105 (3rd)
Notes: We obviously aren’t the all time team we were last season when it came to swiping bases, but man this team can still steal bases with the best of them. Leading the way is Scott Rolen (26, and then it’s followed by guys like Grandy (21), Utley (21), and Kemp (20). This is still a real strength of our offense…perhaps our only one at this point and time, smh.
Negative Team Stat: Runs Scored–.248 (18th)
Notes: I mean, I never thought this offense would be towards the bottom half, but here we are. This has been a real humbling experience for our guys as almost all of them are literally underperforming like never before. If my core guys can’t get it figured out, we could make some interesting changes moving forward honestly.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: C Joe Mauer
Playoff Stats: .288/.329/.466/.795 OPS 4 2Bs 0 3Bs 3HRs 9 RBIs 6 Runs 4 BBs 7 Ks
Notes: I mean, this was genuinely our best hitter of the month. Absolutely pathetic. This type of month should never ever be displayed, but somehow someway we were this bad hitting a baseball. Just not ideal.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
Playoff Stats: 6 Starts 3-3 3.05 ERA 44.1 IP 39 Hs 15 ERs 5 BBs 46 Ks
Notes: Who else? But even this feels like a disappointment. We are loaded with terrific arms, and not one guy was under a 3 ERA. Truly baffling. Ben Sheets was fine, but it seems unfathomable that this was our best pitcher of this month. Absolutely frustrating stuff.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jemile Weeks (AA)
Notes: With a recent PD, he is now even looking better. At only 20 years old, and dominating double A in terms of getting on base (.456 OBP), the sky's the limit for this kid. Hopefully in a few seasons, he will be doing his thing up at the big leagues!
