Tuesday 6/7/2007: Freddy Garcia pitches his 1st shutout of the season
KANSAS CITY - Texas' right-hander Freddy Garcia is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Garcia (5-2) struck out 3 and issued 2 BB, throwing 70 of 110 pitches for strikes. Texas' centerfielder Carl Everett finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Garcia. Texas scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
Tuesday 6/7/2007: Chicago (A)'s Bernie F. Williams belts 500th career homerun
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Bernie F. Williams showed a smile on his face after he belted his 500th career homerun against Los Angeles (A) on Tuesday. A 366 foot drive to left field marked his 500th career bomb, a three-run homerun off Craig Breslow in the 9th inning. Perhaps his best year so far was 2004 where he hit .342 with 43 homeruns and 136 RBI. Bernie F. hit 30+ homeruns in a season 8 times, hitting 40 bombs once. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
Monday 6/6/2007: San Francisco's Thome wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's first baseman Miguel Cabrera had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Miguel was on fire, hitting .552 with 2 HR and 19 RBI. Miguel managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Cabrera has walked 24 times this year and posts a .423 OBP. While batting .353, 78 for 221, he has driven in 60 runs. He's 3rd in the American League in batting and 1st in RBI! San Francisco's first baseman Jim Thome had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Thome helped his team with an average of .481 and 10 RBI in 27 at bats.
Friday 6/3/2007: Colorado's Alex Rios laces six hits
COLORADO - Colorado's rightfielder Alex Rios accomplished a difficult feat in a 24-6 win over Pittsburgh, drilling six hits to improve his career batting average to .289! In the 3rd inning he belted a double off Paul Quantrill. His 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Bob Wickman in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 429 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 2nd inning , in the 6th , in the 7th inning and in the 8th . Alex scored 5 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 70 hits in 195 at bats, resulting in a .359 batting average. Colorado improved its record to 34-23, scoring 24 runs on 25 hits.
Friday 6/3/2007: Detroit's Chipper Jones laces five hits
LOS ANGELES (A) - Chipper Jones is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 1st hit, off Rick White in the 1st inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. A pitch from Rick White in the 4th inning left his bat for a double. A pitch from David Riske in the 7th inning left his bat for a RBI double. He collected singles in the 5th and in the 9th . Chipper scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 78 hits in 218 at bats, resulting in a .358 batting average. Detroit improved its record to 32-25, scoring 11 runs on 18 hits.
Thursday 6/2/2007: Oliver Perez (PIT) will miss 5 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh is without its ace Oliver Perez for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Damion Easley in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Elbow. His ERA of 2.42 helped him to a 6-4 record this year. He struck out 84 and walked 29 in 93 innings. Oliver has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games.
Thursday 6/2/2007: Chris Reitsma (LAA) will miss 7 weeks
LOS ANGELES (A) - Los Angeles (A)'s right-hander Chris Reitsma suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 11th of the game against Minnesota he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Reitsma compiled an ERA of 7.85, going 2-1 in 4 starts. He fanned 30 while giving up 48 hits in 36.2 innings.

PITTSBURGH - San Francisco's first baseman Jim Thome accomplished a difficult feat in a 14-4 win over Pittsburgh, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .281! In the 1st inning he belted a two-run double off Brian Tollberg. A 396 foot drive to right field marked his 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Bob Wickman in the 6th inning. His 4th cleared the based, a three-run double off Fernando Rodney in the 7th inning. He collected singles in the 4th (one RBI) and in the 9th . Jim did drive in 8 while scoring 3 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .283. San Francisco scored 14 runs on 18 hits.
