The Astros continue to linger three games back 1/3 of the way into June. As the fan base continues to try to make sense of the lack of team power, a theory has become popular around the fringes of the internet. Pittsburgh is to blame. Reports came out that the Pirates are paying more money than initially reported in the trade and why would they do this unless they were actively sabotaging the divisional run? The only reason we are giving it the light of day is because the numbers support the theory. Let's take a look at the facts. Some fans have directly used the C word to describe what is going on.
Mike Lieberthal has 3 HR and is hitting well below the Mendoza line despite the fact that he carries a .258 life time average. He has had 6 hits over his last 32 at bats with a HR doughnut. Management has to make the decision whether to reverse his talent hit from the last sim or let the imposter rot.
Jack Wilson is starting to hit but just enough to make rational people question this theory. He is hitting below his career average after 2 straight +.300 years. There is clearly only one explanation for this lack of production. Jacko only does one thing and he is currently doing it a pace that would make the 2017 Astros suspicious (too soon?)
Nomar Garciaparra is the one guy that is contributing at the ML level but he isn't with the Astros anymore, how suspicious is that?
Jason Frasor is the biggest flaw in the argument. He continues to lead the NL in saves and sporting a shiny 1.56 ERA. However, his 1 blown save in his last 10 games is quite odd, blowing a late lead against an 18 win Cincinnati team.
This theory hasn't quite gone mainstream yet but you can be sure there are some knuckleheads at Jake's Sports Bar that will be inspecting every data mark as the Astros continue to try to gain ground in the NL Central.
