The Astros have reportedly reached all their resigning goals for 2007 season during the first day of extension offerings. LHP Cliff Lee will remain with the team through the 2012 season after signing for 3.32 million over the next 5 years. Manager Joe Price was excited about the signing saying "Cliff is a blooming star. He isn't getting the run support so far this year but he is a professional and I know he will give us everything he has every start."
SS Miguel Tejada signed a 3.5 million dollar 3 year extension and looks to remain the shortstop for the near future. He isn't a star but he is a solid option at SS. The Astros could be looking to upgrade in the offseason but Tejada is a viable bench option if that happens.
MR Troy Mattes has a job for another 3 years out of the Astro bullpen after receiving a 1.6 million dollar pay raise. Mattes has been an inning eater, most recently pitching 4.1 scoreless innings against SF and management believes that he earned the pay increase.
The extension that has the fans talking the most is Jose Guillen. During the offseason there was concern that he would ask a huge sum to stay in Houston. However, his agent through out a number that everyone could agree on as the June 1st extension window opened and Jose will be with the Astros for the next 4 years, accepting the teams offer of an extra year. Jose has done nothing except show that he was worthy of the 3.16 million per year, and it may end up being the biggest bargain of this extension period. Since he got his extension, Guillen has 11 hits, 3 multi-hit games with 2 of them being 3 hit games, and has clubbed 3 homers. His average has skyrocketed to a .324 against a lifetime average of .240. Owner Josh Jamieson, "Guillen was one of my alternate dimension favorite players during a historic losing streak in Pittsburgh. Again, I reiterate, this was in an alternative timeline. It looks like Jose is becoming the player that he never could be there."
