With 6 weeks left until the trade deadline, the Astros find themselves in a situation where they could be forced to make a tough decision, who should be traded away and who should be brought back for another campaign. However, if the team is going to get any value out of players at the deadline, especially bats, they are going to have to start hitting more consistently. However, if they are going to start hitting more consistently, we are close enough to contend. This is what causes baseball GMs sleepless nights.
C Mike Leiberthal seems to have received the memo after his last power talent reversal, his bat woke up against Colorado and in the first game of the series against LA. Leiberthal went 6/15 with a HR over those 3 games. If this is not the turning point in the season for Leiberthal, he may end up being shipped off for dirt to give the younger cheaper players a chance. With this mini surge his average is starting to approach the .200 point. All hope is not lost in Mudville.
Finally, an Astro has reached double digit dingers. 3B Eric Chavez hit his 10th HR in the 9-4 win over Colorado.
Jose Guillen continues to emerge as a team leader. Guillen broke into the top 10 in average this sim as his average increased to .326. When asked after the game what has been the difference for this season, Guillen replied, "When I was traded from Boston, the focus was on Matt Stairs. Like I was an add on to the deal. I have a little bit of a chip on my shoulder, this year, and it has raised my focus to a different level.
Mike Leiberthal and IF Jack Wilson had noteworthy sims after the the conspiracy theory story broke yesterday. Wilson will look to keep his 5 game hitting streak going in the final 2 games against the Dodgers and after the off day on Monday in a quick but crucial series against Arizona.
Essentially the next sim will be a bunch of 2 game series with 2 games left against the Dodgers and then two against Arizona, Florida, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. This is an opportunity on paper. LA is one game worse than the Astros, and the Cards one game better. This is a crucial sim with an opportunity to regain second place and put a move on Chicago. Every sim is crucial but it seems that if the teams slides to 6-7 games back of the Cubs headed into July, they will be forced to become sellers at the break, with very little salary room to work with. If the Astros can gain some games in this sim, they have an opportunity to put a cherry on it with 1 game against the Cubs before the All-Star break.
