There is good news, and bad news. The good news is that the Astros have returned to 2nd place, not unlike Chris returning from illness only to penalize us for our writing, they also fell to the dreaded red line to become likely sellers at the break. We want to go on the record saying that you can penalize us but we won't be silenced. POINTS!!! POINTS!!!! You got any more of those POINTS?!
Going in reverse order. Bronson Arroyo gave up a handful of runs against the Cardinals and the offense couldn't get the job done dropping game two of the two game series, 7-5. The Astros won game one of the series, with Peter Moylan anchoring down the middle 3 innings to get the win in relief of Dontrelle Willis who couldn't finish the 5th.
Derrek Lowe gave up a bunch (6) of runs against a first place Arizona team. The day before Cliff Lee pitched a solid 8.1 shutout innings, scattering 10 hits but the D-backs just couldn't get the runners home as Scott Podsednick got on base 3 out of 4 times and stole 3 bases. If SF chases them down, this will be one game they point to and wonder how they didn't score more runs.
Houston dropped game 3 of the weekend series against the Dodgers, losing a 2-0 pitching duel where both pitchers pitched into the 8th but Adam Eaton out dueled Bronson Arroyo to give the Dodgers the 3 game series, 2-1. The Astros were able to salvage game 2 where they got some offense going, scoring 5 runs.
We are likely to see a trade list in the next several hours as it appears that the Astros are preparing for a very active All-Star break.
