A couple of devastating injuries since the June Prospect Watch. 2006 1st round pick, Julio Teheran will miss 1-2 more weeks after pulling his elbow ligament. Multiple specialists have indicated that the injury will not require surgery but it will be interesting to see if the Astros shut him down for the season or place him on an elongated rest schedule. a
Future CF Hernan Perez will miss what is likely to be the rest of the season with torn rib cages. Doctors estimate he could return in 8-9 weeks but the AA season will all but be over at that point.
The good news is there were no major talent hits to the core prospects. The Astros did add someone to the long term plan acquiring SS Jason Donald who will be placed in the queue behind Elliott Johnson for point upgrades. With Chris's triumphant return from illness , the team has drawn close to their first major upgrade of the 2007 season. Experts don't think they are likely to give the boost during the regular season but it is sure to happen before the start of the 2008 season.
Mark Melancon was traded away to the White Sox to try to improve what the Astros are doing well this year, pitching. The other pitchers in AAA are coming along. SP Kroenke still appears to be a year or two away, unless something clicks for him during this off season. The other members of the future ML bullpen are experiencing some growing pains that they continue to work through. Capps is ready to be called up at any time if the injury bug continues to strike. Britton, Barnette, and Harris all look to be several years away still but we will be looking for a large step from each of them next year.
In AA, C Rupp is sporting a nice .324 average. The Astros have recently informed the AA team that they would like to see his strikeout talent/rating improve before he is promoted to AAA. At 18 he is likely behind Elliott Johnson and Jason Donald in the points improvement program.
SS Oswaldo Arcia is trying to keep his name on the Points Improvement list after the acquisition of Jason Donald, what value does that give Arcia?
LF Avisail Garcia is definitely on the short list of potential talent improvements between now and the holidays. He likely will be improved behind Cameron Rupp, if the team is prioritizing improvements based on age.
The team had been mulling over whether to promote 2B Cesar Hernandez and RF Jason Heyward, or let them grow with the other members of the Children of Tomorrow. At the end of the day both of them were promoted to AAA and performed ok in their first AAA sims. Cesar Hernandez is hitting .333 over 12 games and Ryan Heyward is hitting .231 and hasn't been able to get it going in the power department yet. No worries, he is only 17 and this is his first year in professional ball, just the fact that he is looking at AAA pitching this early is an amazing accomplishment.
Without much excitement in the talent bump department and no major trades to announce, the Astros farm system slipped to #22. You can bet they will be looking to improve this before the start of the 2008 season.
