Phillies 2007 June Report
Record: 21-7 Home: 9-3 Road: 12-4
Positive Team Stat: HRs Allowed–34 (1st) Notes: This squad simply doesn’t give up the big hit. This pitching staff truly is the best at limiting those. Now can our Phillies start hitting the long ball, so we don’t waste this great pitching staff. Negative Team Stat: Batting Average–.258 (20th) Notes: Hard to win games when you’re a bottom 10 team at getting a hit. It’s also hard to win games in the playoffs if this is happening as well. We had a much better month hitting the ball, but it needs to get better…and it needs to get better right now.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: LF Matt Kemp Stats: .309/.376/.629/1.005 OPS 6 2Bs 2 3Bs 7 HRs 17 RBIs 20 Runs 10 BBs 21 Ks Notes: Matt Kemp has truly arrived. He was the rookie of the year last season, but you can see he has taken another step forward. He has been our best overall hitter during the first half of the season. We expect him to keep going and lead our boys to another postseason berth.
Best Pitcher: SP Chris Young Stats: 5 Starts 3-1 1.93 ERA 37.1 IP 25 Hs 8 ERs 6 BBs 30 Ks Notes: Chris Young had a really nice stretch here. Honestly, I could’ve picked Sheets or Thomson here as well. I felt like Chris Young had the best overall stretch here, and we will need him to keep it going. We have quite a few games to make up, and he’ll be an instrumental part of our success.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: 1B Wilmer Flores (AA) Notes: Wilmer Flores is 15 years old, and is hitting .354 in Double A. I repeat, he’s only 15 years old. This kid could be an absolute player down the road for us, and I’m really excited to see where he goes from here!
