2007 HOFFBL Team Awards
Best Team: Atlanta Braves (60-21)
Notes: An outstanding job by Brian after finally losing the division to our squad…these guys have bounced back and have quite frankly put it on us. They are 9 up right now, and while I think we will cut it down some, it’s going to be extremely rough to try and take the division with this massive lead. I considered the D’Backs, but I thought after giving it to Galo this past season, this seems like the right pick even if the analytics tell us the D’Backs are the more complete squad.
Worst Team: San Diego Padres (17-64)
Notes: A toss up between the Angels and the Padres, but I think the Padres are actually worse. This is a team that was in Philly, and is now in San Diego, but there has been zero improvement with these guys for years. They have a nice farm system, but man it would be nice for these guys to start accumulating some wins.
AL Best Farm System: Toronto Blue Jays (126 Points)
Notes: The Blue Jays have mostly been irrelevant since I’ve been here, but they do have a pedigree and figuring it out and having good teams. Josh Johnson and Alex Gordon are contributing now. They have guys like Pineda, Longoria, and Rizzo eventually making their way up soon. Things are looking up for the Blue Jays and DougieJays.
NL Best Farm System: Milwaukee Brewers (149 Points)
Notes: Eddie has been tanking for a minute, but it seems like he’s ready to start competing as soon as next season. Cano and Jiminez are contributing, but guys like Braun, Carter, Joyce, Mad Bum, etc. are going to soon make an impact, and when that day comes, look out!
2007 HOFFBL Awards
AL MVP: 1B Miguel Cabrera (Tigers)
Notes: You’d like to see a few more dingers from Miggy, but man what a hitter. He’s on pace for around 60 2Bs, 25 HRs, 140 RBIs, and 110 Runs. Sensational season, and honestly this award is certainly up for grabs, but I think if Miggy can start turning those doubles into home runs, then he’ll run away with it.
NL MVP: RF Scott Podsednik (D’Backs)
Notes: The NL MVP race is quite frankly underwhelming. I settled on Podsednik who has been an absolute nightmare for pitchers at the leadoff spot. He is pace for 55+ extra base hits while also providing around an 80 steal pace. Factor in that he is doing all of this while providing some nice defense for one of the best teams in the league, and I think this is a decent choice. I fully expect some guys to pass him, but he’s my guy at the break.
AL Cy Young: SP Kerry Wood (Orioles)
Notes: Kerry Wood is a monstrous reason why Jah thinks his O’s can catch those Red Soxs in the division. Wood has been flat-out dominant this season. He’s on pace for only 12 wins which ultimately will cost him a Cy Young award since the game values that, but we all know his offense is killing him there. He’s on pace to throw over 200 innings as well as punch out roughly 200 more, too. He’s my guy for Cy Young even though it won’t happen due to a lack of wins (most likely).
NL Cy Young: SP Jeff Weaver (Cubs)
Notes: Jeff Weaver has been far and away the best NL SP this season. Best ERA, lowest WHIP, 2nd most CGs, and 4th in innings pitched. He’s done it all for a Cubs staff that is very nice. He’s looking to win his first Cy Young award, and he certainly has a very good chance to accomplish the feat!
AL Rolaids Relief Man: Francisco Rodriguez (Orioles)
Notes: K-Rod, right? Anyway, this is another Orioles pitcher. He’s sporting a 1.04 ERA and has appeared in 33 games thus far. He’s been about as dominant as one reliever can be…well let’s just say he isn’t quite on the level of the guy in the NL.
NL Rolaids Relief Man: Jose Valverde (Braves)
Notes: Valverde has truly been a force for the Braves, and he really needs to be since those Braves love to play in tightly contested games. Valverde is sporting a 0.50 ERA which is unbelievably good. He’s only seen 20 base runners in 36 innings during his 34 appearances. Absolutely dominant season from him.
