Hoffbl fans it’s time for the playoff update, but before we get there lets look at the studs from the NL that made it to the all star game
The Pitchers:
P Bud Smith from Atlanta, P Jeff Weaver from Chicago (N), P Greg Maddux from Atlanta, P Ryan Rupe from Atlanta, P Yovanny Lara from Arizona, P Chad Billingsley from San Francisco, P Nate Cornejo from New York (N), P Javier Lopez from San Francisco, P Jose Valverde from Atlanta, and P Brian Wilson from San Francisco.
The Batters:
C Carlos Ruiz from Chicago (N), C Josh Rabe from Atlanta, 1B Prince Fielder from Arizona, 2B Jose Vidro from Colorado, 3B Troy Glaus from Chicago (N), SS Troy Tulowitzki from Colorado, LF Shane Victorino from Chicago (N), CF Aubrey Huff from New York (N), RF Scott Podsednik from Arizona, 1B Todd Helton from Colorado, DH J.D. Drew from St. Louis, RF Alex Rios from Colorado, CF Roger Cedeno from Atlanta, SS Jose Reyes from Chicago (N), and 3B Sean Burroughs from Arizona.
Overall hat is six from Atlanta, 5 from the Cubs, 4 from Colorado, and 4 from Arizona as the leaders sending players.
For the first time in a few years, the playoff picture still has some uncertainty going into the post season in the NL. There are not just four teams running away with the playoff spots.
Right now the Mets, Cards, Astros, and Dodgers will need a lot of luck and changes to propel themselves to the post season, but they are still in the hunt.
Currently the realistic Wild Card team will either be San Fran or Philly. Philly coming off their World Series Win, had a very off May and stumbled, but seems to have righted their ship and had a 21-7 June. San Fran with their 53 wins has the tied for third best record in all of Base Ball chasing the DBacks. For the Month of June the Giants were 19 – 9. They really pored it on in late June, going 9 – 2 from the 19th on.
Currently in the Central, it looks like all roads to the post season will be going through Chicago. The Cubs are sitting on a 7 game lead, and unless something changes with the Cards or Stros, are headed for the Central title. They started June a tad slow going 7 – 8 through the 15th, but then after a team meeting on their off day went 12 – 1 to close out the month of June.
Over in the East Atlanta has had one of their best starts to a season in a while. After a sort of slow start to start the season, the Braves have parlayed a relatively weak schedule to end May and through June to jump out the best record in Baseball.
In June only 11 of their 28 games were against teams with winning records, and with going back into May had them face a winning team only 14 out of the last 39 games. During that stretch they went 30 and 9.
The question will be with their surprise start, can they hold off the Phillies for one more Division title? These are the burning questions that will need to be answered over the next couple months to see, which teams will be there at the end for the great fall classic known and MLB Playoffs!
