Following a league wide day off on the 21st, the Astros the Astros took an extra day off dropping game one to the Red Birds on Friday night, Willis gave up 6 runs, 4 earned, over 4 innings and Hill gave up one run to boot. Adams made his redebut at 2nd base and went 1 for 4. Along with the entire team, he was 1 of 4 hits for the team. Game 2 was a duel. Cliff Lee caught the 2-1 loss. Houston was able to salvage game 3 with a solid 3-1 score, Derek Lowe picked up the W and Ford, Nieves, and Burrell collected 2 hits each as the middle of the lineup showed up in clutch moments.
Pittsburgh showed up in Houston for the Monday night game and the Astros were able to just scrape up enough offense to get the job done. Lew Ford got the party started early hitting a 2 run HR in the first and Jose Guillen hit his 13th in the 2nd. The Astros were able to add another run in the fifth before the Pirates were able to mount a mini comeback that fell just short. The Astro bats really got going in game 2, outscoring the Pirates 10-1. Arroyo pitched into the 7th and CJ Wilson finished the all around solid performance. Something we haven't seen in a while. Former Astro Carlos Villanueva got tagged early for three runs in game three. With 2 more runs in the 5th and 2 more in the 7th, the Pirates couldn't get enough offense going to avoid the three game sweep.
Any hope of making the playoffs have faded in Houston and now they wait for the phone to ring with potential deadline trades.
