Pork bellies are up, corn is up, wheat is down. Sorry a Kansas joke
The Astros minor league system looks quite different from the last time that we visited it. To get the bad news out of the way Julio Teheran took a talent re hit and it is being corrected. AAA MR Harris took a bump in the avoiding HR department and it is being corrected as well. Andrew Cashner took an ill timed talent hit right after we committed points for a 1st round pick. However, his talent hit will be reversed as soon as the points allow it.
The Astros dropped some points in the last month. Most recently they spent 50 more points to add a late first round pick to their stable of late round picks. They invested points in 23 yo 3B Elliott Johnson. He became the #54 prospect and moved up to #51 during the last sim. He looks to be the future at both 3B and at the top of the order, as a switch hitting leadoff man. Because of his age, the Astros made him a priority to boost as soon as he arrived from Chicago.
The Astros brought back a familiar name. Lorenzo Cain comes back to the team and immediately moves to the top of the list as the next likely candidate for points investment. If they can get points invested when the offseason points come in, the fans will be able to start imagining Cain and Johnson tearing up the bases together.
It appears that Jason Hayward continues to hold his spot as the future Right Fielder. He is currently batting .255 in AAA.
LF appears to be a location that the team is going to invest points in during the next few years. Avisail Garcia looks like he will be the next points investment, to round out the outfield, although SS Josh Donald could be a possible option as well. Most fans want to see them bring in another option at SS over the next several seasons.
Billy Butler seems to be the future at first while AA C Roop and AAA 2B Hernandez seem to be viable investment options to round out the infield behind Elliott Johnson. AA CF Hernan Perez seems to be the player most likely to have had their major league dreams dashed during all of this activity. While he still remains a nice option for point investment, he falls down the list behind Cain, Donald, and Garcia. His age will allow him an opportunity to move back up the list though.
Things have not changed much in the pitching department. Kroenke and Teheran continue to be the leaading starting pitching prospects and AAA is full of future relievers.
At the ML Level Dontrelle Willis has performed somewhat decently for the Astros at the ML level and has gone 7 innings in his last 3 starts and a 2-1 record. Billy Butler continues to hit well in his utility role, carrying a .309 average as we head toward the midway point in August.
The team checks in at #22 again but the future is bright with the boost to Elliott and the looming Lorenzo Cain boost. Many see the need for the Astros to rebuild. Where we are today, it looks like they may have already started.
