As the 50's come to a close, let's see how the AL teams did in the last draft of the decade!
AL East
Baltimore Orioles:
Round 1 pick: LF Isao Harimoto
Round 2 pick: P Hal Stowe
Round 3 pick: P Harry Fanok
Round 4 pick: 3B Rick Joseph
Round 5 pick: SS Gene Michael
Round 6 pick: 2B Gus Gil
Isao Harimoto could be one of the AL's next big superstars.
In his first season in the league, Dave has made the Orioles' great farm system look that much better and it all started with selecting Isao Harimoto third overall. Harimoto already looked like a stud with many good talent ratings, plus B/B running/stealing. But then, he got a great PD to his home runs, which are now brilliant and he's currently ranked as a top 10 prospect. There is a ton of potential for Harimoto and he should be a star once he's in the major leagues.
In the 2nd round, Hal Stowe was chosen and he too got an awesome PD to his hits, walks and strikeouts early on. Stowe was a solid 2nd round pick to begin with though, but the PD of course makes him a stud now. 3rd round pick Harry Fanok is a decent relief spect despite being fair in walks. The brilliant strikeouts and 9 velocity though is nice and could potentially offset the fair walks.
4th round pick Rick Joseph could be useful with a nice PD or a hits increase at the very least. The same could be said for 5th round pick Gene Michael, who could be a useful utility infielder. 6th round pick Gus Gil will keep the bench warm in the minor leagues.
Dave had an amazing draft and has now put together the best minor league system this league has ever seen. The rest of the AL East should be scared in a few seasons once all those studs are ready to get called up.
Orioles 1959 1st Round Pick Grade: A+
Orioles 1959 Draft Grade: A+
Boston Red Sox:
Round 1 pick: 1B Ken Harrelson
Round 3 pick: LF Al Ferrara
Round 4 pick: 2B Chico Salmon
Round 5 pick: C Bob Barton
Round 6 pick: SS Tony Martinez
In the 1st round, Break selected Ken Harrelson, who could certainly use a talent increase to his hits to be a better player. "Hawk" could turn into a good corner infielder or corner outfielder for the Red Sox in the future and is solid for a late 1st round pick.
Break traded his 2nd round pick and then selected Al Ferrara in the 3rd round, who could be more useful in the future if he gets a nice PD increase somewhere. For now though, Ferrara projects as a backup outfielder.
4th round pick Chico Salmon could be backup material as well. 5th round pick Bob Barton and 6th round Tony Martinez both should probably get cut soon.
Break's draft wasn't great, but Harrelson could certainly be part of his future.
Red Sox 1959 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Red Sox 1959 Draft Grade: B
New York Yankees:
Round 1 pick: LF Carl Yastrzemski
Round 1 pick: P Ramon Hernandez
Round 2 pick: P Dick Kelley
Round 3 pick: RF Johnny Lewis
Round 4 pick: RF Jesus Alou
Round 5 pick: C Tim Talton
Chris traded up in the draft to get Carl Yastrzemski 4th overall. It's weird seeing Yaz with the Yankees for obvious reasons, but he is a stud and should be able to help the Yankees remain an elite team for more years to come. Chris also took Ramon Hernandez in the 1st round, who has future closer potential. But with A relief duration, there is certainly a chance Chris tries to convert him next spring training.
Chris then selected Dick Kelley in the 2nd round. Kelley in the past suffered a drop to his home runs, which Chris has yet to reverse. Kelley is still a decent pitcher that is probably better suited as a reliever.
3rd round pick Johnny Lewis is ok, but with only fair in hits, he can't be looked as starter material unless he gets some significant PD help and probably a talent increase as well.
4th round pick Jesus Alou looks to be decent backup outfield depth and 5th round pick Tim Talton already got released.
Chris did a good job with trading up in the 1st round to get Yaz and Hernandez. Kelley was a decent pick-up, but I'm not big on the Lewis selection. Regardless, Chris has certainly taken advantage of the many assets he has to what he hopes will help keep his empire in the AL East going even longer.
Yankees 1959 1st Round Picks Grade: A
Yankees 1959 Draft Grade: A-
Washington Senators:
Round 1 pick: P Luis Tiant
Round 2 pick: P Wayne Schurr
Round 3 pick: P Gary Kroll
Round 4 pick: 2B Bob Saverine
Round 5 pick: C John P. Sullivan
Round 6 pick: LF Mike Page
El Tiante should eventually be a good addition to the Senators' pitching staff.
To start off his draft, Adam selected Luis "El Tiante" Tiant 10th overall. Despite suffering minor drops in duration and doubles, Tiant is still a very solid pitcher and should turn into a middle rotation starter at the very least.
Adam selected Wayne Schurr in the 2nd round. He looks to be a decent reliever and potentially a closer if Adam increase his hits talent.
In the 3rd round, Adam went with Gary Kroll. Kroll has SP duration already, but is also fair in walks. Regardless, he should at least be decent pitching depth.
4th round pick Bob Saverine benefited from a nice PD already to become more useful in the future. 5th round pick John Sullivan and 6th round pick Mike Page both will need help to rise up the system.
Adam's draft wasn't spectactular, but there is some potential within this class for him.
Senators 1959 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Senators 1959 Draft Grade: B
AL West
Chicago White Sox:
Round 3 pick: 2B Ken Hubbs
Round 4 pick: P Fred Wenz
Round 5 pick: P Mike Lee
Round 6 pick: P Bruce Brubaker
Mark traded both his 1st round and 2nd round picks away. In the 3rd round, he took Ken Hubbs, who seems like good backup infield depth right now. 4th round pick Fred Wenz, 5th round pick Mike Lee and 6th round pick Bruce Brubaker are all not impressive and probably won't have any effect on the White Sox going forward.
Mark traded his picks away, so there isn't really much to grade here. Sorry.
White Sox 1959 1st Round Pick Grade: N/A
White Sox 1959 Draft Grade: D
Cleveland Indians:
Round 1 pick: P Bill Hands
Round 2 pick: P Phil Ortega
Round 3 pick: P Jack Cullen
Round 4 pick: P Jerry Fosnow
Round 5 pick: P Lee Gregory
Round 6 pick: C Archie Skeen
Ashes selected Bill Hands 11th overall in the 1st round, who recently got a nice PD increase in both walks and strikeouts and now is clearly the top spect for the Tribe. Originally looking like middle rotation potential, Hands could now be a good #2 or even an ace on some rotations.
In the 2nd round, Ashes chose Phil Ortega, who could turn into a potential bullpen piece, or maybe more with some PD help. 3rd round pick Jack Cullen recently got a walks and strikeouts increase of his own and now looks to be a future part of the Indians' pitching staff, but more likely as a reliever.
4th round pick Jerry Fosnow, 5th round pick Lee Gregory and 6th round pick Archie Skeen will need a lot of help to get anywhere.
Ashes' draft was solid and the PD's he got certainly will help his rebuild progress.

Indians 1959 Draft Grade: A-
Detroit Tigers:
Round 1 pick: P Ray Culp
Round 2 pick: C Tim McCarver
Round 3 pick: SS Gene Alley
Round 4 pick: 3B Coco Laboy
Round 5 pick: 2B Al Weis
Round 6 pick: P Fred Bruckbauer
Trevor selected Ray Culp 17th overall in the 1st round. Culp has good potential, but could use a talent increase with his walks to become even better. He looks to be good middle rotation depth.
Trevor then took Tim McCarver in the 2nd round. McCarver could turn into a solid catcher with a hits talent increase. 3rd round pick Gene Alley could also be better with a hits increase, but he's more likely to be a utility infielder.
4th round pick Coco Laboy, 5th round pick Al Weis and 6th round pick Fred Bruckbauer will likely spend at least most of their careers in the minors.
Trevor's draft was decent for the late picks he had and Culp and McCarver could both useful later on.
Tigers 1959 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Tigers 1959 Draft Grade: B+
Kansas City A's:
Round 1 pick: 1B Sadaharu Oh
Round 2 pick: P Jose Raphael Santiago
Round 3 pick: P John E. O'Donoghue
Round 4 pick: RF Clarence Jones
Round 5 pick: C Phil Roof
Round 6 pick: RF Purnal Goldy
Sadaharu Oh was the clear cut #1 choice in this draft and should turn into a mega superstar in no time.
With the 1st overall pick, Noah made the right choice to take Sadaharu Oh. The lefty slugger is already close to being major league ready and should be up by 1961 at the latest. He will hit a lot and hit a lot of home runs in particular, but he will also draw a ton of walks as well. While Oh's character ratings are nice, the one negative is the strong winning desire. Noah will need to pray that the A's are winning a lot by the time Oh's extension talks come around in order to help him stay put. Hopefully, this will work out for the A's by then.
2nd round pick Jose Santiago could be a solid starter if his duration gets improved with time. If not, he's got very good relief potential as well. The same could be said for John O'Donoghue if he gets a talent increase in his hits. We'll see if Noah ends up doing that at some point.
4th round pick Clarence Jones could be good backup depth or a potential starter with PD help. 5th round pick Phil Roof will probably be a backup catcher in the minors and 6th round pick Purnal Goldy already benefited from a great PD to potentially become more useful. He could turn into a major league backup eventually.
Noah's draft started out with a bang and was pretty solid all-around. Good job, Noah!

Expansion
This draft featured an added twist: two new AL teams were able to start participating in the Angels and Senators/Rangers. Let's see how they did!
Los Angeles Angels:
Round 1 Pick: P Mickey Lolich
Round 2 Pick: P Fred Talbot
Round 3 Pick: P Art Quirk
Round 4 Pick: P Frank Carpin
Round 5 Pick: C Pat Corrales
Round 6 Pick: CF Jake Jacobs
In Stutter's first draft here, he made a solid selection in the 1st round by choosing Mickey Lolich 6th overall. Lolich could be the first ace the Angels will ever have and is good across the board with A duration. Very solid choice.
2nd round pick Fred Talbot had good potential as well, especially if he eventually gets a talent increase in walks. 3rd round pick Art Quirk is more likely to be extra bullpen depth.
4th round pick Frank Carpin's home runs already dropped, but he still could be possible extra depth later on. 5th round pick Pat Corrales was the first hitter taken by the Angels, but he will probably be a backup catcher at best. 6th round pick Jake Jacobs will probably rot in the minors.
Stutter went pitching heavy (although his 2nd and 3rd round picks were both auto's) in his first draft, but the Lolich selection was very good. Gotta start somewhere!
Angels 1959 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Angels 1959 Draft Grade: B+
Senators/Rangers:
Round 1 Pick: P Joe Horlen
Round 2 Pick: P Joe Bonikowski
Round 3 Pick: P Bucky Brandon
Round 4 Pick: P Dave Vineyard
Round 5 Pick: 2B Luis Alcaraz
Round 6 Pick: P Dick Burwell
Jeff 2's draft started with selecting Joe Horlen 7th overall in the 1st round. Horlen's ratings are nice and he should turn into a future ace for the Senators/Rangers.
2nd round pick Joe Bonikowski also has very good potential, but will need a talent increase in walks and some duration increases to have more potential. Hopefully, Jeff 2 will make use of his points once they start adding up.
Jeff 2 then went with Bucky Brandon in the 3rd round. Brandon himself could use a walks increase and duration work, but more than likely will turn into a reliever down the road.
4th round pick Dave Vineyard could be useful if he gets some PD help. If not, he'll be extra pitching depth. 5th round pick Luis Alcaraz and 6th round pick Dick Burwell will be benchwarmers in the minors.
