ARIZONA - Great days are rare. But not for Arizona's left-hander Tony Saunders. San Diego found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Saunders (15-6) struck out 5 and issued 3 BB, throwing 68 of 107 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Arizona was catcher Kenji Johjima, he finished 2 for 4. Arizona improved its record to 87-37, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.
Saturday 8/20/2007: Brian J. Anderson pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
CINCINNATI - Houston's left-hander Brian J. Anderson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Anderson (9-8) fanned 5 and walked 3, throwing 111 pitches. The hitting star for Houston was rightfielder Melvin Nieves, he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, hitting a homerun. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Friday 8/19/2007: Nomar Garciaparra collects 2000th hit against New York (A)
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's shortstop Nomar Garciaparra joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 4th inning was a single off Ken Cloude. Along with his 2000 hits, Nomar collected 154 homeruns and 984 RBI in 11 seasons. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
Tuesday 8/16/2007: Toronto's Riedling out for full season
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander John Riedling will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Baltimore on Tuesday. Riedling was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Bicep Muscle.
