Not many of you know but I have two children, an 11 year old and 15 month old. Huge age gap! Anyway my 11 year old is kind caring boy, who has a learning disorder and struggles in school. He is in special education and struggles with reading. Numbers are his favorite thing so He has finally became obsessed with baseball, Dads favorite sport.
Now let’s go back to Pujols final year in STL. I explained to my son the chase for 700 homeruns and that it is unlikely to happen. I showed him Alberts stats and the pictures of me getting to watch him in STL.
So my son and I watched every single game we tracked his homeruns and I explained how they game was played. It was so funny he knew I played slow pitch softball so he was like how come you don’t play on TV hahahah!
That year every time I could I would take Noah to a game, so he could experience the ball park. Noah has sensory issues so sometimes it is a struggle but he loved every moment of it. It was my greatest joy to watch the cardinals I loved my entire life with my son and teach him what makes baseball so special.
Then Albert does it he hits 700 freaking homeruns I let my son stay up late since they were playing in LA, I was holding my 3 month old daughter and shouted so loud when he did it my wife about killed me for waking her up. I instantly started crying, Pujols my hero just showed my son how amazing baseball is and how even improbable never give up and chase your dreams. Noah has improved so much in school after following the cardinals and learning the game and tracking the numbers. It makes me proud having a special needs son seeing him thrive.
Now the heart break! I took him to his first playoff game against the Phillies. It was amazing we saw an amazing game. We watched a rookie hit a massive homerun to give the cardinals a lead. Then it all fell apart. We watched the cardinals blow the lead in the 9th and eventually lose. My son was heartbroken he didn’t understand how the cardinals could lose. Then I explained to him there can only be one winner and every year all the other teams have to watch their season end. He cried the whole way home. But I’ll never forget this special season because my son fell in love with the game I love.
Thanks for reading , Go Cardinals

I’ve always said it’s how we mark the seasons of our own lives. I fell in love with the Cubs in 84. We had got cable in 83 and in 84 the Cubs were in the pennant chase all year after not seeing the playoffs since 45. I’d race home from school everyday hoping to catch Harry singing thr 7th inning stretch. As I went through high school I’d watch countless games with my grandfather, who was fairly incapacitated because of congenital heart failure. I remember years after he’d get so pissed at Mitch Williams when he’d blowup in the 9th. In 2003 watching the Marlins series with my then 9 year old son. The gut punch of the Bartman game and realizing that this franchise was cursed and that curses are a real thing. My son, coming to me after Kerry Wood hit a HR to give the Cubs the lead the next game and me not having the heart to tell him that it was over. The Cubs don’t overcome stuff like that and questioning what kind of father raises his sons to be Cubs fans. My grandfather passed away in 98. In 16 I think I cried more when the Cubs beat the Dodgers to go to the WS than when they won it. When they won it I was numb. The rain delay. The comeback. And finally let it all out just wishing my grandfather had lived long enough to see it. Baseballs the best. Your story makes me happy Stool. It’s awesome that it connects you like that and you’ll both always have those memories. Go Cubs Go!

My first sports memory was the Royals winning it all in '85, when I was six. George Brett was my hero for a very long time!

Other end of this spectrum from last night. Colombia is losing 2-0 to Mexico before the half. This kid has been talking about the game for 3 days. He gives up on the game and I have never wanted a comeback so bad even though I was secretly rooting for CONCACAF 🤫
Colombia comes back to win 3-2 in stoppage time and he already knows he did wrong, "I will never stop watching a game again."
I love sports.
