Phillies Offseason Report
Verdict: Russ Davis wasn’t any good for us in reality, so we won’t particularly miss him, but filling the SS position is quite challenging given the position's current climate. Losing Saito was in some ways expected only because he was getting up there, but never easy to lose an absolutely quality reliever like him. With Giles, that was the biggest loss. We have now lost back to back quality OFs in Juan Gonzalez and Brian Giles. Juan retired on top, so I certainly get it from his perspective. With Giles who still had another 2 years left on his deal, you would’ve thought he’d maybe stretch his career out. He wasn’t as good, and so maybe he wanted to avoid falling off even more. Respect that.
Verdict: All of these guys left, and frankly all of them (aside from Castro) had rather interesting contracts. Hebson has a career 4.77 ERA. Him getting $25M over 5 years is a tad curious at best for a team rebuilding. He’s just not a guy I’d want long-term given his profile…especially that contract. With Otsuka, it was just a one year deal, but he got $7.5M which is absolutely an overpay. No matter who, I don’t particularly believe in paying any reliever over $5M per. Just how I build teams, though. Last but not least Bobby Madritsch leaves, and this one hurts in more ways than one. He was really good for us in a breakout campaign, and then decided to not want to stay here. He then spurns us by going to one of our division rivals in the Mets. If he’s doing what he did last season or close to it, then his contract at $34M over 4 years is pretty solid. All in all, we are going to miss Bobby M. The rest are replaceable.
Verdict: Yuck! We struck out, but we might be able to snag Bradford and/or Kile. Not particularly great, but would provide good depth.
to the Phillies for 1st, CL Howell and MR Hensley
Verdict: As expensive as Matsui is, he does basically replace Giles with better offensive production and certainly adds a gold glove ability out there in CF. We also acquired an elite reliever in Mike Adams who will be instrumental in giving us quality outs at the end of games. We gave up a 1st and a couple of relievers which I’d say is good business for us.
C Carlos Ruiz(Majors)
2B JJ Hardy(Majors)
MR Jose Veras(Majors)
Philadelphia Sends
C Joe Mauer(Major)
SP Nick Adenhart(AAA)
SS Jemile Weeks(AAA)
2009 PHI 1st Round Pick
Verdict: The biggest trade of the offseason belonged to Play and myself. Acquiring two of the best bats at premium positions in this league was too good to pass up regardless of losing a top future ace prospect. I usually never would give up that type of arm, BUT how can you not when you’re in the middle of a run here? Mauer is also a guy we will miss because it was one of my earlier picks, and certainly played a big role in our turnaround. He was thought to be a part of the core, but acquiring Chooch eases the burden. Losing Weeks also sucks as he was a kid we had extremely high hopes for. We also gained another quality reliever that we hope we can lock up long-term. Great trade for both sides I think, and I’m interested to see how it pans out for both sides!
Verdict: All in all, I think we are a much better team today than we were last season. We got complacent on the offensive side of things, and it crushed us last season. This year, we are loaded on the offensive end. If Utley and Granderson can bounce back, we are just silly good there. The same top 4 arms are there, and the bullpen is perhaps better if not the same. I think we are in line for a big season, BUT the NL is brutal this year, and all wins will be earned. I’m intrigued to see how we stack up despite the lofty expectations!
Good luck to all teams.
