The most exciting thing about the Pittsburgh system right now is the farm system. The system was mired in the high 20s for most of last season but as we are turning the calendar to the second full season of the rebuild, the efforts are starting to show results. The payroll is among the lowest in the league and the owner is beginning to narrow down designs for a new stadium. Jamieson released a statement early Saturday, "Forbes Field is going to be 100 years old in June. The University of Pitt is begging for the land to expand. We have some ideas in mind, we just have to finalize the plan. The stadium should be ready to open about the time we have a winning product to put on the field again,
Down on the farm, the team has avoided talent drops through one sim. However, the team received news after Friday's sim that top SP Prospect Zach Kroenke would miss 5 weeks with bone chips in his elbow. Joe Price said, "We want Zach to get that elbow cleaned up now so that he can focus on getting ready for the majors. We will be holding our breath hoping that a PD doesn't hit him while he is recovering.
The biggest chatter has been the talent boosts that took hold just before opening day. The Pirates saw a talent improvement to Dexter Fowler's hits, Elliott Johnson's BBs and Ks, and Mark Trumbo's hits, BB, and K's. Many fans expect that his BB and K's will be increased soon as well. All of the boosts sent the Pirates farm system shooting into the top 5 and the fan base is anxiously waiting the next announcement for upgrades as the points shipment is coming from the league for participation.
Many fans and owners are starting to prepare for the holiday rewards that the Commissioner is gracious enough to send out annually. Fans are wondering, now that the OF is in pretty good shape for the future, will middle infield finally start to get some point love? The Pirates have multiple options to boost for the middle infield. Jason Donald is quickly approaching the age deadline to get him developed enough to get to the majors, Cesar Hernandez has been a project for several years, will this be the year they make him a full blown ML prospect? The organization just acquired 3 middle infielders during the draft as well, 2B Josh Harrison and 2B Neil Harris seem to be great candidates for talent boosts as they offer switch hitting and left handed hitting solutions.
SS Eugenio Suarez needs a small talent boost on hits and Marwin Gonzalez needs a bigger investment, however they are young. The popular logic around the water cooler is that fans want to see the Pirates finish the job of boosting players based on age and then focus on the younger guys.
Jamieson closed the monthly minors report press conference with this conclusion, "While we said this was a 10 year process, nobody said it has to last 10 years. We believe that the moves we made in the last 12 months have moved up our timeline considerably. At this time we are still committed to the 10 season rebuild but we believe that the fan base can look forward to positive results much sooner."
