Monday 5/2/2008: Chicago (N)'s Glaus out for full season
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s third baseman Troy Glaus will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Chicago (N) and Arizona. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Glaus collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Torn Abdominal Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. While compiling an on base percentage of .333, Troy hit .291 and slugged .524. He has collected 16 runs batted in this year.
Monday 5/2/2008: Zambrano (BOS) and Webb (MIL) win P.O.W. award
Boston's pitcher Carlos Zambrano had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League's best player of the week was Milwaukee's Brandon Webb, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 7 starts this year Brandon struck out 55 batters in 54.2 innings of work. Sunday 5/1/2008: New York (N)'s Cornejo named Pitcher of the Month
The best month of April in the American League certainly had Seattle's right-hander Jeff Weaver, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 33 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 5-1 while pitching 33 innings. His ERA in April was 1.57. Jeff got two complete game shutouts as well! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is New York (N)'s Nate Cornejo. He started 6 games in April, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.00 in 52.2 innings. Nate fanned 49 hitters. Nate fired two shutouts!
Sunday 5/1/2008: Detroit's Jones earns Batter of the Month award
The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Detroit's Chipper Jones this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Chipper pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .386 with 8 and 31 RBI while slugging .644. It's the 1st time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Colorado's first baseman Todd Helton. He had an on base percentage of .569 and hit .495, while driving in 24 runs.
Saturday 4/30/2008: Bobby Madritsch pitches his 1st shutout of the season
NEW YORK (N) - Bobby Madritsch took the mound and never left. And San Diego hitters couldn't touch him at all. New York (N)'s southpaw gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 153 games started. Madritsch (3-0) fanned 7 and walked 4, throwing 116 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' New York (N)'s second baseman Kelly Johnson got 2 hits in 3 AB, blasting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Madritsch. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Friday 4/29/2008: Esteban German on fire, hits for cycle
LOS ANGELES (A) - Esteban German is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. In the 2nd inning he belted a double off Jeff Francis. A single in the 4th off Jeff Francis accounted for his 2nd hit. Number 3 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 380 feet, cleared the wall in left field. A pitch from Jeff Farnsworth in the 6th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. It tied the ballgame at 11. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Esteban scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He is hitting .250 this season, with 3 HR and 15 RBI. He's now the 130th player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 4/24/2008, Melvin Nieves was the last player to hit for the cycle.

CINCINNATI - Arizona's left-hander Odalis Perez is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Perez (3-1) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 116 pitches. The hitting star for Arizona was first baseman Carlos Pena, he went 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, with 2 RBI. Arizona improved its record to 14-9, scoring 2 runs on 2 hits.
