Phillies 2008 April Report
Record: 20-5
Home: 10-2
Road: 10-3
Positive Team Stat: HRs Allowed–13 (2nd)
Notes: We are once again going to be one of the best teams at avoiding the long ball which is a pretty massive advantage. For us, nothing has really changed besides a much better and deeper bullpen WHILE also keeping all the same arms except Bobby M who was replaced with the savvy vet Brad Radke. Phillies once again are loaded with arms, and look to continue to impose their will on teams once again.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Avg–.244 (21st)
Notes: Gotta say, pretty disappointed with this. We added 2 of the very best bats the NL has to offer in Chooch and J.J. and so we need to be in the top 10 here. There’s no excuses when you have this type of potential on offense. I think we will start to sky rocket in some of these offensive cats, and you’ll see a scarier Phillies team.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: RF Curtis Granderson
Stats: .272/.398/.556/.954 OPS 4 2Bs 2 3Bs 5 HRs 10 RBIs 16 Runs 14 BBs 5 Ks
Notes: The Phillies offense is off to a slow start as per usual, BUT the Grandy Man isn’t. What was an abysmal 2007 campaign for him, he is trying to erase that memory. He produced 11 extra base hits while also getting on base nearly 40% of the time. Excellent start for Granderson who is looking to remove all doubts about his abilities as a true 5-tool player here.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
Stats: 5 Starts 4-1 0.66 ERA 40.2 IP 24 Hs 3 ERs 7 BBs 46 Ks
Notes: Last year Ben Sheets wasn’t coming out of the gate firing which many thought could be a bit of a postseason hangover. This year, not so much! He has come out and dominated like the Cy Young Ben Sheets. That he even lost a game this month is more of a reflection on the Phillies offense stinking it up that particular game. Revenge tour for Ben Sheets is off to an incredible start.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: 1B Wilmer Flores (AA)
Notes: Wilmer Flores looks like a potential stud down the line. In saing that, he is already mashing double A ball. He is hitting .348 while slugging .661 in the first month. He’s also already hit 14 extra base hits with 11 of them coming via the long ball. This kid, while only 16 years old, is looking like the real deal. With the Phillies not really having anybody long-term at the 1B position currently,
